Mini 14 cold bore change of impact.

Also, try using the "AR" load data in the Sierra manual.Their test rifle has the same twist as my mini.My 582 mini quite likes H335 behind the 63g and 65g Sierra bullets.I refer to the bottom of the page and check the "Accuracy load" bullet speed and then weigh my charges to that speed.

I had the end of the barrel threaded and a Smith Enterprises Vortex flash hider installed. Along with this I installed an adjustable gas block, and an Amega Ranges forward rail. Apparently all of this serves to stiffen up the barrel which improved accuracy immensely. My mini is very picky on ammo though. It seems to like Winchester white box the best but I can make it work with anything, the only problem is when I change brands of ammunition I have to re-zero everything, and I still get the occasional flyer. I should add that mine is 197 series, hope this helps in your situation.

whats your twist rate? my 582 is 1in 9 and hates boat tail ammo, sucks cause i just bought 1000rds federal 55 gr but its still fun to shoot on the 50yard range. seem to have better luck with 62-65 gr ammo, but the best ive ever gotten is 3" @ 100 yards, with the bedding and trigger job. have since removed the scope (couldnt keep it locked down anyway) and just shoot irons and haveing alot more fun. sometimes a mini is just a mini, not a long range platform but a fun plinker. adam

i've got a 582, and its 1.5. really you were getting 3"? I put my scope on and locktite is always done on all my scopes, no issues with the scope on the 582. It likes 53gr hornady match, 55gr Sierra GK's and I have a batch of 60gr HP's to try this week.
I had a Stag AR for a few years, and this is my second Mini. I'll sacrifice some accuracy for actually being able to take the rifle in the bush with me... AR's seem like fancy cars that never leave the driveway.

The Ruger Mini 14 Target Rifle has an "adjustable harmonic dampener for tuning minute-of-angle accuracy". I've read some positive reviews but I don't know if you can put that on yours.

Get this, I was reading this thread at like 23:00 tonight and saw the mention of the HAR BAR. I checked out the site, then sent an email to see if they would ship to canada. The got back to me within 20 mins (by 23:30 ish). wow.
So for those of you wanting to know, he said he will ship to Canada, but it has to be purchased in parts with extra shipping, as he cannot export it without all the export permits etc to do it as a "kit".
He said $86 bucks for total shipping (2 packages), plus the cost of the item ($159)
Anyway, try and get a Canadian store to email you back way after business hours? not likely!

where can I find a wire folding stock like that to fit my Mini 14, that is shown in post #17? I have seen only a few addvertised that fit the 10/22.

that stock has been around for a long time, bought one in the 90's for about $80. keep looking you'll find one

It is a Butler Creek Stock. Bought it locally a couple of years ago here.

Well, I found their website, and the part number for the folding stock, but not where they are located. Are they Canadian? If they are USofA, can that stock be shipped to Canada? Is there a Dealer around for Butler Creek products? Thanks for any help.

First thing with the handguard. It clips onto the barrel AFTER insertion into the housing on the gas block assembly. It should be free to "wiggle" and not make contact with top of that assembly, particularly with the stock inserted. When I replaced my handguard (with the wood stock), I thought the fit had to be snug, because that was how it was with the original. When I replaced the stock with the new one, that snug fit proved to be an epiphany for me as I experienced the exact issue as yourself.

So, firstly - with the stock removed, check the handguard and undertake some light sanding and or trimming if there is excessive contact. The handguard (when affixed to the barrel) should have some play when it is set into the gas block assembly. Next comes the tricky part.

The Hogue stock is basically a pliable rubber coating over a plastic skeleton. There is a metal liner, which fits over the stock and is inserted into the gas block assembly as well. You will note that it is a stamped contraption and has marks all over it from compression (pressure) as opposed to friction from movement. My rifle also had friction marks where the slide assembly made contact with this liner. When fitting the stock into the gas block, it fit quite snugly sliding into the gas block even before the receiver was in contact with the stock. At this point in time, the gas block was acting like a fulcrum and pressure from the stock/liner assembly was being exerted. This pressure is relieved as the block warms up after a few firings and metal starts to expand.

To relieve this, I took a pair of adjustable pliers, and gently "squeezed" the liner tighter to the stock and filed away excessive points of impact. After repeating this process several times until the stock would insert into the gas block assembly without undue pressure. I also lightly taped the liner tabs (making direct contact with the gas block as I noted the lower one (in particular) was making almost full contact with the gas block. I lightly sanded the surface of liner tabs and lightly greased - just because I like to - to ensure that there was not any uneven pressure.

Lastly, I undertook some light trimming on the stock to ensure that there was no binding or pressure points between the handguard and the stock. When the trigger guard is affixed, my handguard will "wiggle" slightly in vertical movement.

My groupings improved immensely and the bullet wander went away. That was my solution. I also discovered that the rifle adapts very well to the Winchester 64 gr psp bullets with about 25 grains of Win 748 powder.

Sobo I'm home now finally and I will investigate as you instructed above. I'm anxious to see if it will solve my problem. Stay tuned. I'll post some pics of my before and after targets.

I've seen those stocks on the shelf at Cabela's Winnipeg.

Well unfortunately there was no improvement in the point of impact change problem. The groups tightened up though with a slight change in the load. A nice 10 shot group in about 2" with 64g Berger varmint bullets. So the hunt continues for a cure. It may just be a waste of time but from the beginning this was going to be a project and a quest to learn what there is to know about the Mini 14. I welcome any constructive input. Thanks.

Just got back from the range after testing my Mini with the installed Har-Bar. A slight improvement of about an 1" but still a change in POI after one or two shots of about 3.0"
