Mini 14 failing to go into battery

When you last took the rifle apart did you reinstall the op rod spring guide upside down? That would cause the problem you're talking about. With the rifle removed from the stock group and placed guts up on a table, the tapered side of the spring guide belongs on the underside of the spring retainer pin, not the top.

Thanks for that, turk. I checked and it's good, if we agree that it is set to the space between the rod and the top, not the bottom of the rifle. But I had it out at the range today, and really went through the process deliberately. I could never recreate the problem intentionally. Different ammo, brands and .223vs5.56. Different factory mags. I left the range not really further ahead. So I get home and give a good cleaning and once over, then I see something. I have a stainless mini in a synthetic stock. No marks are present on the mini or its components, but low and behold, I find slide marks on the stainless heat shield in the stock just below the 'piston'. Not easily fixed to me but what do I care? I used a punch and knocked it in a bit. Range report to follow-hopefully next weekend.

Scratch that. The mini is on its way to Quebec-Ruger's canadian warranty/repair site. I noticed a hole in the bolt where the cast was too thin for the bore for the firing pin. Ruger advised that they 'have heard of this issue and advised of a possible slam fire situation'. Looks like the rifle will be down for about 3 months. Me sad.

Contact Wolfe gun springs. Buy their ruger op rod spring and you will be good to go. I got a ruger for a very
reasonable price because of this very issue. Wolfe solved it first try.
