Hey guys,

So I've been running a mini 14 for some some time now and am debating switching to the mini 30 (which I just bought, it's on it's way) and I could use some second opinions here.
Oh, and please don't start suggesting other "better" rifles, I only use stainless steel guns (I hate rust) and can shoot a reliable 2moa with my mini. That's good enough for what I do.

Here are the pros and cons I've got so far, but I'd like to know if I missed any.

Mini 14

Pros:
Tapco 5/30 mags readily available and cheaper
Lighter rounds for carrying
Softer recoil for my girly shoulders

Cons:
The pitch from the bullets speed does more damage to the ears when not wearing ear pro (you know for zombie apocalypse)

Mini 30

Pros:
Cheaper ammo
Lower pitch that can easily be shot without ear protection in a pinch

Cons:
I can't seem to find any reliable 5/30 mags
Rounds are heavier
7.62x39 recoil makes follow up shots slower and double taps less accurate

Personally I'd prefer the 7.62 for this platform.

Haven't investigated but will any if the 7.62 pistol mags fit the mini ? I guessing no but not sure myself.

How about a good break to help with follow ups. Can really help sometimes and not too expensive.

Both are really good points. Once I get mine I'll go get some xcr and ak mags and try. I'll repost here to update you guys when I know.

I know the LAR mags don't, tried that already.

7.62 x 39 is a capable caliber for medium sized game, should you desire / require it for that. The recoil in the mini-30 (I'm a big fan!) is very manageable. I'f I'm going to make a hole in something, I want it to be as big as possible. I'd rely on the 7.62 at 124 / 147 gr. vs. a 55 gr. .22 anyday to get the job done on the range, bush or during the pending zombie invasion.

Some people complain that the mini 30 has trouble with hard 7.62x39 primers and steel cased ammo .... Some people claim that Wolff springs solve that. There doesn't seem to be a consensus on that, but most people claim the mini 14 can gobble anything. If you're stuck with brass cased ammo, then the mini 30 gets expensive to shoot. I don't have any experience with either of these rifles, but that's what I could find with Google.

mini 14 is better and more reliable then the mini 30
My mini 14s were fairly good grouping... but reliability was an issue, the one went into the Warranty center twice.

there are a lot better platforms then both in the same price range.

I have both in SS, keep them both! 223 and 7.62x39 take turns at being cheap to purchase. Both are good guns

They're both ok, I tend to like the 14 better. I find them both a bit of a pain to clean if you shooting corrosive. And my non corrosive .223 was cheaper than .7.62….. I like how the xcr cleans so much better. Otherwise I think you got the points rounded up.

Correct it does outshoot the other two however as you have stated its rare and expensive as hell. The 300 ACC version is in the identical boat.
