Mini-14 or Norc M305?

I have the mini14 target version, Norc M4 and have had several Norc M305's.

I would recommend the Norc M4 for CQB type fun. And they are less money then a mini14.

The cost of spare mags for the mini 14 is enough to make the decision for me.

223 is way less money to shoot and at paper, do you really need to big bang?

I love how easy it is to change mags in an M4 platform. Mini and M305 - not so much.

Norc M4's are retailing for around $650 w/ 2 mags. I am sure used ones will be around soon enough. That is not much more then a M305.

The CZ is another fun alternative as is an sks. Surplus Russky ammo is pretty darn cheap.

New stocks from promag are going to help the mini 14 along in being a better tactical rifle but that will add costs. The M305 is pretty heavy and long by comparison.

Handling a 14.5" barrel and a short pull stock and moving around stuff is a breeze.

Not sure why you feel an AR is out of the question?

I just bought a a 580 series mini with 2x 5round mags and 2x 20 round mags in stainless for $600. I played with it today and having never owned a Mini I'm impressed with its accuracy with the iron sights, its solid action and and how compact/solid it feels. I ran 100 + rounds with out a hick up. One thing I can say is that it shoots as good if not better then my XCR I previosly owned, doesn't jam like it used to and cost me 1/4 of the price.
If one cares to accessorize there is a lot of new stuff coming out as of late. I can't comment on the Norc quality or how they shoot but they aren't that much cheaper to buy and ammo cost will be alot more.

Cheers!!

Thanks all, I sincerely appreciate the feed back and the time.

Its looking like a Mini -14 will fill the niche sooner than later.

But the Norc is something I also cannot ignore for a "Build" rifle, and that will definately come after.

The Hungry Clinics look simply fantastic and Ive gone though varying pic thaerds drooling.

hey ATR Check out the EE, there are 3-4 mini 14's up for sale I saved a bunch by buying used, I think they are way over priced brand new. Also, the m14's dont take much to build really. I bastardized one into a taticool rifle, my next one will stay the way god intended it to be

Think of it this way -
CZ858 ($695)
Mini 14($825)
Mini 30 ($925)

magazines - CZ $25.50 (everyone has them) -
Mini14 up to $100 (not easy to find) -
Mini30 upwards of $120 (and good luck)

ammunition -
5.56 $299/500 rounds (you can shoot this in 1 day, trust me)
7.62x39 - $185/1120 rounds
.308 - $485/500 rounds

Etc. - Canadian available (hell Canadian Made) Tacticool gear for the CZ is everywhere, cheap. Mini stuff has to come from the 'States.

The reality is you'll probably spend more on your ammunition in a year (if you shoot) than you did for the gun so ammo price is king. The best non-restricted, military style, carbine available for someone on a budget who wants to shoot (as opposed to polishing a gun you can't afford to shoot) is the CZ858. The plus is that they are in my experience, also a better rifle than most of the others (in this category) on the market. I think that they're a better rifle than the AK (though not necessarily a better weapon, there's a difference), and yes, I've owned all of them including the AK in 2 calibres.

Re price of a new mini - I bought my most recent (make that very recent) mini-14 stainless synthetic from P&D at $699 and it's still listed in-stock at that price on their website, so make sure to shop around as there is a pretty big spread in price. Maybe our strong dollar is staring to take effect....

Why is it crappy?
Explanation please

The older model 180 series were known to lack accuracy. Ruger retooled their facilityback a few years and started the 580 series which are actually solid little rifles that shoot fairly well. Do some reading on the 580 series mini and the concensus is that accuarcy has greatly improved.
Some people tend to think that these should shoot like a heavy barrel varmint gun....not gonna happen.

Ar's are like A holes everyone has one and they are over rated. To be honest i would take anything in 7.62x39 over .223 any day.

I guess Im just adding to the lack of knwledge, but I read here like a mofo and learn so much.

Im on the fence on whether to purchase a Ruger Mini-14 or go with a Norc M305/M14.

I do not hunt and this is for training purposes, specifically with CQC scenarios.

Ill be training for the patrol carbine portion of my club, but buying an AR platform is out of the qustion for a long time.

The Mini-14, obviously is much more expensive than the Norc, however if I were to get the Norc, I would almost immediately upgrade to something like the Tapco Intrafuse stock.

The Norc route is still a lot more cost effective. Im pretty sure I can still be very competetive when shooting and competing.

On a recent thread someone posted very sage advice that "This is supposed to be fun........" and I take from that not to worry so much that it is the shooter as much as it is the rifle.

Ive had a Glock pistol for 10 years, recently got into shotgun with a nice purchase, and now want to break into the rifle component without killing the pocket book.

Any thoughts?

What club do you belong to that has a patrol rifle?
