how acuratte can the new batch of ranch rifles be with handloading 1 - 2 inches at 100 yards want a plinker slash varmint gun that is semi and won't cost over 1000 dollers
 
Mini-14 accuracy is poor for the money asked with any ammo. Mind you, carefully working up the load using match bullets might get you 1 to 2 inches. If you're lucky. Most of 'em are lucky to give 4 to 5 inches with factory ammo.
A new Mini is going to run you nearly a grand. Epp's is listing new SS rifles at $792. $902.88 with the taxes(Ontario).
 
Mine works pretty good for what you are asking just don't expect miracles and you will have a fun plinker that will handle the varmints too. (the beavers ain't talking)

Mini 14 Target rifles are getting excellent reviews in respect to their accuracy. I ve always wanted a non restricted semi but have heard the older mini's shoot poorly. From what I gather Ruger shut down to upgrade their machining tools and accuracy has become better. The Target model is getting consistant 1.5" and better from most reports.

find me another MOA capable semi-auto for a grand. the mini-14T is just about the best value in a semi-auto varmint gun going right now according to people who actually own them. even AR nuts are picking them up now. there are many mini-14T owners who have been getting sub-MOA with factory ammo.

the '4-5 inches' thing is the old minis - he specifically asked about the new ones.

and for the record, on the old minis that 4-5 inches can be halved with the addition of a recoil buffer and a steel flash hider to add weight to the barrel. 2.5" groups with factory ammo are perfectly acceptable for a semi-auto carbine that will still function reliably regardless how dirty (unlike ARs).
 
I just bought a mini 14 Target w/ hogue stock of the board here and am going to do a test drive next week I'll try and get the results posted.

Im going to try loading 52 gr. Berger match in front of some Benchmark, then try Varget and see what happens. The a good load and the ability to tune the barrel weight it should produce.

The mini has been know for its solid reliability and now with its claim of MOA capability and non restricted status I think it will be a great little rifle. I cant weight to do a "pop"."pop"."pop" on a coyote, not that it needs three but hey...

My only problem with my mini target is the thing is a heavy bugger but needs the weight for accuracy.
I have also heard of guys dumping their AR's, just as manbearpig posted.

Scott I look forward to hearing your results as I would love to get an accurate Mini, I love the rugged simplicity.


As manbearpig stated the accuracy issues are with older mini's and the new ones are supposed to be much better
