Mini 14 Target

I always wanted a Mini 14 but could not see a real use for one other then shooting up some watermelon or something, so I never bought one. The newer Mini 14 target edition is supposed to be very accurate even to 300 yards.

I am 6' 4" 290 lbs with a big fat kraut head and have no access to handling one before buying (need to order in). Given the thumhole lamy stock, any experience as to how this gun will fit me - length of pull and cheek? Any general comments on accuracy and quality?
 
Can't help you on the sizing issue. I can say that the Mini-14 (any Mini-14) is extremely reliable. Mini-14's typically are not super accurate in terms of long range targets if MOA is your objective. The target model is pretty accurate for a semi but has nothing that holds a candle to a well fitted bolt action rifle. If you must have a semi-auto, it is quite accurate in that category.
 
Shilen makes pre-fit barrels for the mini-14... been waiting for a accuracy report on one before I bite the bullet. Mystic had been working on one in the spring that I've been waiting to see a range report on....
 
Had a target mini. tuned it up and tweaked the tuner. Lo and behold, it shot very well with groups sub MOA at 100yds. Never got a chance to test further cause someone wanted it a lot more then me when they saw the results.

With a Shilen barrel, performance will be at these levels without as much mucking with the tuning BUT you will still need proper bedding.

There is lot of tuning that is needed for this rifle to really shine. Proper handloads and managing gas flow are critical.

They can be made to shoot if you are willing to put in the work.

They look pretty damn ###y I think. The harmonic dampener is supposed to tighten up your groups substantially. But I think anything more than 300 yards is going to be hard to get true accuracy.
 
bought one in the spring. Took a very long time and several hundred rounds to find a load that works. Will shoot three rounds touching at a hundred yards all day long. Have shot it to 400 yards at a 18 inch gong with sucess. Fun and frustrating to shoot accuately til i found the load, but can shoot at gophers and yotes as its not resticted.
 
I tried out a laminate-stock version belonging to a friend of mine, and found it quite uncomfortable. I'm 6'2" and 200 lbs and could not warm up to that stock. The gun's owner is about 5'8"/175 lbs. and loves the fit. I bought the Hogue version and am glad I did, although I suspect that the rigid laminate stock may contribute to the slightly better accuracy we are able to extract from his gun.

Keep in mind that if you buy the laminate stock gun and don't like it, you should be able to get an aftermarket Hogue for about $100 or so. If you buy the Hogue gun and then decide to switch, it'll cost a lot more if you can find the stock at all.
 
6'2 235 and I have 2. 1 stock target model and a rebuilt one with a McGowen 204 barrel. Both are a hoot. Running yotes don't have much chance. The 204 has a hogue stock, and will shoot moa and so does the target model, with the right loads. I also shoots the ivi surplus into <2" at 125 yd. 5 shots rapid fire. I love the things, the only 'issue' would be trying to retrieve the 204 brass. While I wouldn't think you would want to use them for F-class, they are sure enuf a great truck gun/gopher getter.
