Have a chance to purchace a Mini 14. Owner is saying it was made in 1985. Heard good and bad about these guys but have been thinking about one for a while. He is asking $650.00 and say's it has gone thru about 200 rounds. I am thinking he is a little high in price. Any comments on this gun would be appreciated. Want it just as a fun plinker and maybe the odd Coyote.

That will be the older much less accurate vintage if that matters to you.

The bigger issue is that you can probably buy a new stainless one for around $850 or so.......

i have a 582 series mini-14 and the accuracy is dinner plate at 100 yards 5 shot group, 5" with a cold barrell on a good day. very fun plinker at 50 yards.

My 181 series will do 1/2 inch on target with iron sights on my 25 meter range. Can't wait for good weather and some longer distances outdoors! No problems with varied ammo. I would buy that one if you won't!

I had an older one. Always wanted one....had it for about 8 years. Fun as hell to shoot as my mag seemed to be broken....lol. No accuracy What so ever. That's what made me sell it.always ran without flawlessly. I sold mine for 650 with the wood and synthetic stock, tactical case and 100 rounds.

Your 582 is messed up then. I have a 581 (same gun) and I get 2.5"-3" groups at 100m with cheap ammo. Yes it's a fun plinker but at $650 for the old one, I think that's a bit rich. That gun is worth $500 tops...

I just picked up a Butler Creek folding stock for my late model Mini 14, she looks soooo sweet, now. I won't get a chance to fire it for a couple of weeks, though!
AWOL, where ya been? How about posting that Rx sub to the Whipped Magazine. Some of our fello CGNer's need to sub to it! Some are having big time trouble with their wives, it seems!:p

My 181 series has shot lots of gophers and and few coyotes too. Not to mention pumpkins watermelons, steel plates etc etc. Lots of fun...still have it. I did take the scope off it and only shoot it with iron sights now.

I seriously considered picking up a mini not long ago. After much research and asking a lot of questions, I came to the conclusion that the mini 14's are a overpriced plinker. If you find one that will do 2.5-3.0'' at 100 yards, that's a keeper. 4" to 5" is more typical. $650 plus for a rifle that doesn't group any better than my $150 SKS at the same distance is not worth the cost, IMHO.

PS: I still would like to have a mini-14 but not at the current asking prices.

I keep coming to the same conclusion.

I want one so bad based on the size and looks of it, but for me accuracy is what matters more. I am thinking a JR carbine, cuz I can't convince myself to buy a plastic SU16......
