Mini 14

They had a Mini 14 Ranch Rifle at Wholesale Sports in Langley a week ago. First time I ever touched the RR model. I don't need one. No disrespect intended, it just didn't feel right to me. Cool to see at WSS though.

Yes… The mini target is an awesome, extremely accurate rifle. When you get the right dampener setting, with a given load, easily a MOA Weapon System. Problem is, most guys that buy these never really take the time to adjust the dampener to the right setting, they just go out and shoot it and than say 'this thing is just an overpriced Mini/14' .... LOL! Dumb-asses. The 'adjustable' dampener is adjustable for a reason!!!

I would debate you on the "awesome, extremely accurate rifle" comment. If you look closely at your rifle when dis-assembly occurs, you will note that from the camber through to the gas block, the barrel tapers down. Just like the regular (ranch, ss) mini-14's. From the gas block to the end of the barrel, it is very heavy. I owned a target (notice the owned) and you could certainly not call it a tack driver by any stretch of the imagination. It behaved similar to the 580 (yes, I currently own one of these little jems) in that after a few shots it had a bit of a wander as well. The outer heavy barrel was not getting warm, different story for the portion of the barrel under the hand guard - it was warming up quite nicely. The shots were not grossly wandering, but they behaved quite similar to the 580.

The other very disturbing pattern with that rifle was once the damper was set for one particular bullet, it was wildly out of proportion when firing another manufacturer - yet alone a third bullet. I am talking (the second and third) upper left of target to lower right. THAT drastic behavior does not happen with my 580. In my opinion, the target model is not worth the money. Even a 580 is an expensive plinker when compared to the SKS, but that mini has a garand action after all, and it really operates flawlessly and reliably.

I love my mini 14, Cause it goes with me anywhere and everywhere. Just installed an Archangel Sparta stock on it, it adds a bit of weight on it. But by far the best looking stock out there and solid, I really like the fact of having a full lenth picatinny rail on the top with is alumminium. Added some flip up sights and Just runbs like a beauty. I was using Norrinco .223 55 grain Ammo, They tend to be a bit of a hotter load. Also i got my 5/30 magazines from irunguns.ca, i paid roughly 30.00 for one and nobody else had any at the time. they run fine just a little fine tunning with some needle nose.
