Mini 30 ammo? whats good?

1.5" - 2" at 100 yards, surplus out of an SKS, with irons.... The smoke people blow these days.

The Ruger owners manual will for sure say to avoid removing the rifle from its stock to clean it. The whole purpose of that design is to be able to sufficiently clean the rifle without having to remove it from the stock. You will have to always remove the rifle from its stock to clean it properly after shooting corrosive ammo. As a rifle gets removed from its stock, over time the stock will wear out and the rifle will begin to shift in its stock while shooting causing accuracy to suffer. The effects are a lot worse with wooden stocks.

I've seen SKS that shoot that well, it's rare, like really rare and never a chinese one.... I had a 45 russian that shot average >2 groups when it was "new" a create of chinese ammo throwing sparks out the muzzle changed that rather quickly thou. that czech ammo is great, it out shoots a lot of commercial stuff I have tried.

my sks shoots roughly 4 inch groups at 100 and with a red dot. I find the Czech stuff to cover everything in a black soot. So I like Chinese and Russian ammo. The Bulgarian stuff is good too.

Ok, I'll play nice again and get back on thread...

As for whether or not you'll damage your rifle: Odds are no. But as others have said, you'll need to remember to clean after use. Preferably same day and definitely not more than 24 hours. If you can do that, then you'll be fine.

Personally, for my SKS, I keep two "plinking" rounds and 1 hunting round.

1. Surplus Ammo: For range days when I know I'm going to burn through a lot of ammo, and I'll be able to clean either before I leave the range, or as soon as I get home.
2. Barnaul: Not as cheap as surplus, but still pretty cheap. For days when I'm going to be "field plinking" and know there's a good chance I might not get around to cleaning it that day or the next.
3. Hunting rounds: Again, non corrosive, so I'm not going to have to panic about cleaning right away. For when I'm out looking for cat killing coyotes (otherwise leave the coyotes alone because they help keep the gopher population down).

All that lets me get lots of trigger time and practice in, and my rifle stays in great shape. The Mini-30 is a Garand Action style rifle, so you can count on it as being as rugged as an SKS. That's what the Ruger Minis are really well known for - good reliable truck guns that go bang every time you pull the trigger, year after year, with minimal maintenance and effort.

Just my 2cents as an interwebs know-it-all jerkwad. Your mileage may vary.
