Mini-30 tactical

You can still get one with a 18.5" barrel. I've never seen a 16". If you really want the shorter barrel you could just chop down the 18.5" and reclassify it as restricted.

No you can't, any barrel below 18.5" must be manufactured as such. Even if the barrel is already under 18.5" you cannot cut it, you would have a prohibited device.

It says the overall length of the rifle is 36.75"..so wouldn't that make it a non-restricted rifle. As its overall length exceeds 26". I have a factory Ruger 10/22 tactical sniper that has a barrel that is less than 18"but is still classed as non-restricted. As well as my AR-7 .22 which I've never measured but I know the barrel is shorter than 18" and pretty sure even fully assembled is shorter than 26"overall. Please correct me if I'm mistaken but seems to me this Mini-30 tactical would be a non-restricted rifle based on its overall length.

Cheers

You are mistaken.:)

It's a centerfire semiauto. It needs a barrel of at least 18.5" as offered by the manufacturer. No home trimming allowed. Rimfires can have shorter barrels if overall length is adequate.

Ok ..I thought that may have been the case but made the mistake of using common sense. If Shotguns & Rimfires are ok then why would it be different for center fires. But this is Canadian Firearms Legislation were talking about. Common Sense is to be disregarded lol. Thanks for the heads up. I'll stick with my M305 Shorty :D

Actually it is similar with shotguns. You can buy a pump gun at 8.5 inches, because the overall length is still (barely) legal. But if you want a semiauto, you are back to requiring 18.5 inches in the barrel.

You're right...forget common sense. They didn't use any when they wrote the regs, so you can't expect to use it when you read them.:D
