By all means, sign onto the Shiloh forum. Great guys, lots of experience with BPCRs.
Wondering what in hell I was gonna do to come up with some .36 cal card wads, I picked up a piece of stainless tubing - and LO! It miked .375 ID!
So I ground a piece of it to suit and now I'm punching out thin card wads.
You could be right about the use of unchecked bullets being an accuracy issue. Right now I'm hoping it's like the beveled base on most lead pistol bullets, just a little sharper.
Also, there is a 'bumping up' effect with lead alloy soft enough for BP use.
That might take care of the problem. I'll post the results once I've got some first hand experience.
As for larger calibres and no wads, I was at the range today with my 50-70 Shiloh Military Rifle, and in between shivers was able to shoot a five shot 3 1/4" x 2" group at 100 with 65 grs FFg (no wad) and slightly better with 28 grs 5744.
With the bore dirty from BP, I fired on the smokeless target again and put two rds on top of each other, but 4" lower than the original group. Go figure .....
Hitting our 1'x1' gongs at 100 and 200 yds with either load is duck soup. I amuse myself doing it off hand when the guys with scopes are missing it from the bench. I'll hit the 200 3/5, and the misses aren't far off the mark.
