Hey folks, just thought I'd throw up a mini range report since I made a few changes. I received a few PM's after saying I had bought this scope so I thought I'd give you guys something to look at instead of talking about it.

I bought a Remington 700 PSS .308Win from an old army buddy who wanted to get rid of it because he had only shot 200 rounds through it since he bought it back in the 90's.
When I bought it from him last fall, it was outdated and needed work. The barrel is good on it as far as I can tell, but the following things needed attention:
- new glass (Tasco Super Sniper 10x42 fixed)
- new rings (ARMS quick detach steel)
- new base (Remington aluminum two piece)

Here is a pic of the rifle when I bought it:

So in the last year I played around with different things, fired about 250 rounds through it, and found my groupings were just not tight enough. I was shooting over MOA at 200m. Also there was no consistency at all. It would vary from day to day, group to group. Some days I would show up to the range having not touched my zero since last time, and I would be way off zero.

So I decided it was time for an upgrade.

I picked up a badger 20 MOA rail from the EE.
After much research about various scope brands, I ended up buying the Sightron SIII 6-24x50 FFP LRMRAD
I also went with Nightforce Ultralight Low Scope rings.

When I mounted the scope, I removed the old one to reveal a great deal of wear on the aluminum mounts from the ARMS rings. They were obviously moving around and rubbing with the recoil. Not good rings. Even worse mount.

Went out to the range today. I burned off 6 rounds of Hornady A Max before I went to my new round choice, Federal 168gr Gold Medal Match.
So this group was fired from the 200m. This is my first group ever firing 168 gr gold medal match. It was not zeroed on target, it was just a group to test the consistency of this new setup. I went on to zero later.

Group size is 1.625" which is .81 MOA @ 200m if I'm not mistaken. If I would have got that one round into that group I might have been under .5 MOA. So close! (pic is rotated 90 degrees right, stupid Iphone)

Also attempted a little box test, to test the tracking, but I kind of screwed it up. Here is what I got, but it is not perfect. I will attempt again because I don't think I maintained my point of aim very well.

10 clicks each way @ .1 Mil at 100m. Rifle is Zeroed for 200m. 168 gr Federal Gold Medal Match. The scope tracks real well. The shooter might suck a little. :p

I am thrilled with the new scope, and I have to say the clarity is incredible even at max range. You have to play with the focus adjustments at different ranges as you go out if you want max clarity but I assume that is pretty normal.

Anyways I am happy with the change in performance from the rifle. The steps I have taken thus far are showing results, but there are still things I can do to accurize it further: Bedding, trueing, etc. I am now saving for an AICS 2.0 stock so that will solve my bedding and bottom metal issue. (my rifle has a 4 round DBM, but I would like to do 5's or 10's) Hoping that one will happen in the spring.

Next is load development. I am thinking about 178 gr Sierra matchkings, with Federal brass (I have like 150 rnds worth). That's a few months off, but for now 168gr Fed GMM works for me!

I'm surprised the Sightron fanclub hasn't commented. Honestly love this scope! I have had it out two nights in a row hunting deer, and at dusk it collects light so well even with the sunshade on, that it actually makes things visible long after the naked eye cannot get enough light to see clearly.

I have an SIII 10-50 and I"m quite happy with it as well. +1 for sightron scopes.

Your absolutley right that you must adjust the focus to get max clarity. This is quite normal for any piece of optics. Also note, that as you increase magnification, you decrease your depth of focus. If you notice the backgroud and foreground of your target is out of focus, now you know why.

Parallex also has to be adjusted to make the reticle remain in the same position while having small head movements.

Don't trust your distance markings on the knob. Their rarely right. Notice how some of the other scopes don't bother putting distance markings on the knob? That's why. Can't be blaimed for not being precise when they are just hash marks.

I don't follow the markings on the focus knob. I just focus to my eyes. I don't notice a problem until I get 18 x and up. Then I have to adjust.

Hunted 3 days in a row with this scope, you just can't beat the clarity and the amount of light she gathers. I can use it right up till 30 minutes after sundown, no problem.

Nice glass!

I bought a Sightron SII 6X20X50mm. I haven't got to hunt with it yet. Not much need for it in the woods of Northern NS, but I got one spot I can set up for 250m or so.

I bought it to try f-class next season. I'm going to the range tomorrow to try it out for the first time. I've been playing with it a bit in the fields at home and it's pretty stellar!
