mini SXS rifle build

Cool project.

But like... Is your shop submerged in salt water part time? I don't know that I've ever seen rustier, grungier equipment still being used, lol.

Thanks guys I'm pretty excited about it.its chambered in 22 short so I'm not actually sure what I'll do with it other then look at it and shoot targets with it but I'm looking to get it finished up pretty soon I hope to get the fore stock finished tomorrow. I'll get some pics up when I do.

And Ardent, yup I have seen them and could only imagine being able to buy a rifle at that cost. I'm damn sure it would be a fine rile to carry in the woods though.

Potashminer, Ardent explained it perfectly. And with your comment about long range I have a feeling this process would be more so done with rifles regulated at 50-100m. Far from long range. It's kind of a hack way to do it but I'm only trying to regulate my barrels to 30' since it's chambered in 22 short. I am going to use the cci "target" 1080fps 29gr ammo to regulate with.

As mentioned, I have never tried to "regulate" barrels - so good on you for trying! From what I read, that "regulating" is very specific to the load - a different load likely goes somewhere else (different powder used, different amount of powder, different shape or weight of bullet) - to the extent that I read that "old days" BP guns had the regulated load engraved on the butt plate, and the bullet mould that was used to regulate the rifle at the factory was included with the purchase of that rifle. So if you have a particular load in mind for it, either stock up or be sure that you can get more!!

I think was Ross Seyfried had articles in Rifle magazine about getting an elderly black powder double rifle to work with modern powders - not with the higher end BP stuff from 1800's. I do not recall if he had the original bullet mould or not. I think he eventually got a deer with that old double barrel and the loadings that he figured out for it, but most definitely was a "journey", as I recall - several of his initial attempts did not work out well, at all! As I recall, it was nothing to do with excessive pressure - was all about getting holes to show up on target, where the sights had been aiming at - from either barrel.

I think I recall a passage from his write-up - he was on Anticosti Island for white tail deer - the guide wanted him to "sight in" his rifle before going hunting - Seyfried's reply was to the effect that the sights on that rifle not been adjusted for circa 140 years, that he had no clue how to do so, and had no intention of even trying to.

Old equipment, it’s affordable. I own a good deal of it myself.

That's true the lathe I have I rescued from the corner of an old shop. The guy said it hasn't ran in 30 years. It's a 1932 Clausing lathe. It came with that 4 jaw chuck and some face plates and a bunch of other stuff in boxes. All rusted very much but it was free

But yes my shop is about 100' from the ocean and also in a rain forest

Here is the lathe after I got it cleaned up.

Nothing wrong with the 22 Short, it's the oldest and most efficient cartridge in existence. I've only used it on Rabbits in Mrs McGregor's Garden and Feral Cats. Still working through boxes with McLoed's price tags on them. I want to say velocity is 945 fps.

I've cut sxs shotgun barrels to regulate for slugs. However it wasn't pretty as all I have is a hacksaw and no real metal working talent at all. Hate my self everyday because of it but hey that is life. Love the project and I wish more guns were chambered in 22 short

i ended up finding the time to make a fore stock for this rifle today. Its not by best work but looks and will function fine, I installed it using the factory Remington no6 method of a screw and since i have 2 receivers i used two screws (really i used 2 screws because its 6" long opposed to the 3" one that the no6's came with)

I hope to get the butt stock drilled though and started shaping tomorrow.

I envy guys who can make things. I can't make a bird house they will use...

Could you turn a 410 SxS shotgun into a double rifle by re-ling the barrels?

I bought a Merkel 12g sxs to cut the barrels to 20" and reline (ideally I'd use the 12g barrels to make a mono block and then thread the barrels in it is the proper way) them with 43 Mauser barrels but love it so much as a shotgun I used the 43 Mauser barrels on other projects and still have the shotgun. It's by far my most used gun I own. Raccoons, pine Martins and crows at the coop are a weekly thing. (Crows go in the coop and steal eggs the fly away with them)

Hmm if you get good at regulating maybe you can make up some poor man's paradox guns by regulating intersurplus German doubles. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge

i got some more work done of the rifle, not done yet but getting there.

I roughed out the butt stock. it needs lot of fitting and sanding done still but i put a singe coat of BLO on it to be able to see the grain, the fore stock had 4 coats and is not a lot darker even though its from the same blank.

The inletting for the butt stock is on center..I'm not sure why the pic shows it way off. It must be the shadows or angle. (I used my mill to do it so it's within a few thou)

lucky for me the sights line right up with my eye when i shoulder it. so it feels like its going to be conformable to shoot

left to do is-
Finish the butt stock shape, fit it better and put more coats of BLO
Install the butt plate
Install a tang between the receivers and tap it for the butt screw
Sand blast everything to prep for rust bluing
Rust blue everything

a few specs on the rifle

weights 6 pounds 8 oz (6.5 lb)
OAL is 32.75
LOP is 13"
