Mini14 vs Mini14 Target

So I'm in the market to purchase nr rifle in .223 the xcr isn't really in my budget so I looked at the other few candidates that fit my price range. Benelli MR1, Keltec SU16, and Mini14. It ended up between the mini and mr1 but the weight of the mr1 surprised me a little. So in the next couple of days I'm ordering a mini. My question is do I get the regular stainless synthetic or the target model with the hogue stock? Those who have owned or shot both is there a dramatic difference in accuracy? I will be scoping either rifle but occasionally I would like to shoot with just irons and the target does not have them. Does the harmonically stabilized barrel offer that much of an advantage that I won'tiss irons? Thanks for any help.
 
I bought the hogue stainless target model. The synthetic feels cheap as hell. Ive fired a couple rounds out of mine and its awesome. Just bought a Nikon 4-12x40 Prostaff that i have yet to sight in. But of the two deffiantly buy the Target Model. Theres a couple youtube videos showing that the harmonic stablizer actually does work. Watched one guy shooting a 6" gong at 300yards no problem
 
Thank you, I am leaning toward the target model. The synthetic stock would be replaced pretty much right away and actually as I'm typing this I just answered my own question lol. Buy the $809(best I found it) model and spend another $100 plus tax and shipping on a hogue stock... Or for $970(again best I found it) get the hogue stock with it and the barrel stabilizer...?!?!? Think I just made my decision. Thanks
 
The target model can be more accurate than a regular mini-14.

If you found the MR1 to be on the heavy side the mini-14 target will be a huge disappointment. (it's 1.5 - 2.5 pounds heavier than the regular mini.)

I guess it depends on what you plan on doing with this gun.

I have a Target/Hogue model now, and it shoots far better than any of the several standard mini's I've had over the years. BUT...it seems like a lot of the latest-production standard models (the ones with the barrel tapered in front of the gas block) shoot very well also. The Target model is much heavier, and although the harmonic stabilizer works as advertised, I had the barrel cut off at 18.5 inches which removes the threads for the stabilizer and gives me a much lighter and nicer-handling little gun, perfect for coyotes out to about 250-300 yards.

I've been toying with the idea of an MR1 also. I like the feel and the handling, but I just wish it wasn't such a butt-ugly gun!

The Keltec just wasnt for me, didnt feel right when shouldered, the factory sights are garbage and the folding option just seemed pointless to me.

Yeah sorry there was a little more to it than that. The Mini was heavy aswell but the weight was more at the front of the rifle which I actually like and have become accustomed to with some of my other builds. The MR1 just felt heavy to hold in general with all the bulk of weight centered right in the middle.

I owned both.

Mini 14 stainless: light, shoots 5.56 and 223, not the most accurate rifle for bench rest shooting.

MIni Target (Hogue): very heavy, shoots only 223, great hogue stock, very accurate for bench rest shooting.

I love the mini (great price), but it won't accept 10 round AR mags and lacks rails.


In the end, I kept the standard. Only because it was lighter to carry for coyotes. I'm getting old and don't want to carry a 10 lb rifle.LOL
 
In my experiences , if I am going for hunting ,the only choice is the standard mini-14 because of the lightweights and the ease of running through the woods . The accuracy can be improved by more practicing and the right ammo that working through the gun .This gun is very enough for small to medium games and also tactical combat ,anyway for longer ranges I need to carry a 308 as well .

I pulled my third shot but that's at 100 yards with a normal ranch rifle
