Mini30 in TROY mcs problems. Need a new gun smith.

I have a Mini30 which worked very well in its original form but I decided to modernize it and I put on a Troy Mcs chasis and now she barely fires every other shot. The dent the firing pin leaves in the primer is not quite as deep as it was and the magazine doesnt lock into place properly. I took it to the "gun smith" at the Fredericton Gun Shop who I am now absolutely convinced received his title as gun smith from a cereal box. Unfortunately, even though I had been warned of his incompetence, I used him because of the scarcity of properly advertised gun smiths in this underpopulated province. I dropped the rifle off in late November and its now nearly Febuary and the smith never once called to give me an update nor has any confidence enducing explenation of what progress has been made been given. Ive called a few times but usually his wife will answer the phone or no one will, I asked every time for a call back but never got one and his wife/secretary has never been helpful.

I called today and I explained that I was picking up my rifle whether it was done or not and I said I would pay for what ever work had been done and to my surprize no work had been done. He gave some reasons for why nothing had been done to the tune of "I cant figure out whats wrong with it". Maybe Im being a spoiled pissy little girl but is this reasonable? I mean, hes a gun smith... figure it out... thats what his job is... 3+ months seems a bit much for absolutely no feed back or sign of progress.

I dont know what I expect to get out of this thread, perhaps advice, someone who has experienced this or something similar, maybe just a good link to a trusted confident smith in the area... Or just a place to vent my frusterations.

Troy Msc its made for Mini 14s only. I seen one fitted ,but it needed re-milling of the stock to work properly.


Boom! Theres your answere. Now wasnt that easier than a 3 month wait at a gunsmiths. I always ask the wise and all knowing gunnutz first. 99.9% satisfaction garunteed.
 
I know most will disagree but I don't trust "GunSmiths" per say.

If I have a Ruger, I send it to Ruger or their rep in Canada (As long as I haven't voided the warranty by modding it)

You have a problem with an XCR, you contact Wolverine (Their the XCR Rep in Country aren't they?)

My Swiss had issues, I contacted the SAN rep in Canada, even when Switzerland got a hold of it they couldn't figure it out, it was funny cause my friend suggested a local smith, and I mean anything is worth a shot but if SAN can't figure out why it ain't workin' then some guy who's never heard of a Swiss Arms Classic Green isn't gunna be able to "Have a look at it" and tell me anything new LOL

I go to the manufacturer, or there rep, not a random gunsmith. A lot of these guys have been "Gunsmiths" for decades, some of them wouldn't know modern if it jumped up and bit them in the ass, let alone how to deal with a specific to that particular platform type of problem.

Try take it out of the troy chassie and reinstall in the oem ruger stock if problem resolves it self then try and slowly /check for differences and make adjustments to rectify as that ,doesn't sound like a warranty issue more of a fitment which can be resolved by patience.Can't know for sure without pics.Some of the older mini30s didn't like surp ammo either,but problem sounds like an assembly issue as you said that the mag now does't engage either

No it was done in states, and I seen pics posted on perfectunion ( I think) forum few years back. Budy claimed that it worked flawlessly.
I'll see if I can dig out the link for ya.
 
I understand your frustration with the local "smith". Hence why I never got my barrel threaded on my RFB yet. He just doesn't instil confidence in his own abilities.
