l As stated earlier, they are matchlocks if shot and signaling devices with blank charges and replicas of antiques if sitting on the mantlepiece. All those categories are covered in cc84 1(b) SOR 98-464 except for the replica. They do not have to be registered under cc84 3. I am too lazy to look for you but probably elsewhere in cc84 you will find that a handgun is defined as being designed to be shot with one hand. Since these are not so designed they become your choices above.
I am almost positive that it is cc 84 3 where you will find that if you rob a bank with any object used to represent a firearm, then that object is a firearm for legal purposes.
Look up those sections; they should be online. Section 84 is a section of definitions. If it is not online, request a copy of the gazetted version of C68 (the firearms act) from the Dept of Justice. My copy is titled "the statutes of Canada". You do have to be careful with the numbers because it is easy to confuse the firearms act numbers with the criminal code numbers.

While that's all fine and dandy, what exactly is the LEGAL definition of a weapon? If you shoot projectiles out of these cannons, it doesn't mean that it's a weapon. Wouldn't intent have anything to do with it? Using the legal concept of "reasonable man", would a reasonable man expect these cannons to be used as weapons?

With the exception of firearms, a weapon is defined by its use and intent. All firearms are defined as weapons and that is straight from a judges mouth during a trial (R vs Quocksister). They differ from all other objects in that regard apparently.
Go back to one of my original postings; your personal use of the cannon defines its category and it can be an antique, a replica or a signaling device (firing blanks). None of these categories require registration.

Try brasswithclass.com he makes beautiful Civil War replica artillery in several configurations and scales. I've seen one of his in golf ball caliber and it's so much fun to shoot, also makes neat little beer can mortars.

Any machinists that could make me a .50 cal 12 inch bore from some bar stock, and maybe a perpindicular hole at the end to weld a cross bar through for mounting? (oh yeah and a fuse hole)
I want to make a simple model of a cannon, pm me for further discussion if interested, or if you know someone who will.

Oh the memories,

I made a nice little .50 cal. bronze cannon on my dad's lathe when I was about 14. My buds and I used to shoot rivets and .50 cal. lead balls and marbles and other fun stuff out of it. My dad recommended we use long handled welders tongs to hold a match to the touch hole and wear a face shield, after all he didn't want us to get hurt :D

Wonder what ever happened to that beauty.....

K now I'm sold, looks like a fun lil hobby.
What about powder? Do these lil cannons have a specific type? Just plain ole black powder and how much?
Hopefully they come with an owners manual. And can we shoot confeti out of them?!
Gonna get me one.
