Just throwing this out there as a discussion point.
I see pple doing all sorts of good stuff to the ols SKS, such a cheap starting point. If itall went bad whats to lose eh.
Has anybody ever chopped the barrel and if so what is the Legal minimum length, super accuracy is not an issue. Assume the system would be for CQB max range 100 yds.
Like I say there are an awful lot of clever "kitchen gunsmiths" on these forums
and Im gonna bet someone somewhere has done it.
If it were legal to do so wouldnt it make an awesome little rig.
Cheers :)

Being a semi auto centerfire, the sortest chopped length has to exceed 18.5" to keep it non-restricted.
18 to 18.5, it would have to be registered as restricted.
Under 18, it becomes a prohibited firearm.
It could be rebarrelled with any length of barrel, but under 18.5, it would be restricted.

Thanx Tiriaq, so it would be possible to go nuts in the kitchen and as long as you realise its restricted, the sky is the limit.
This might just be something I want to pursue, Ive got a couple SKS's one nostalgic and one Bubba'd. The Bubba'd one looks unbalanced with all that barrel. So ...wheres my tape measure..I think 1 inch beyond the gas tube would look balanced and still be good for up to 100 yds and still leave room for a fore sight.
I have a restricted PAL..a tape measure and a vice.........and its raining...its all coming to gether LOL
Thanks again for the quick reply

No, the limit for you is 18. You cannot cut the barrel down to less than 18", otherwise it becomes a prohibited device. A barrel manufacturer may produce a shorter barrel for you...but its origin must be at the factory and not as a result of alteration.

You may shorten it to 18.5" or greater, leaving it non-restricted.

You may shorten it to no less than 18", but less than 18.5", making it restricted.

You may have a barrel manufacturer produce a shorter barrel for you, making it restricted.

Your options are varied, but what you are permitted to do to the existing barrel is limited.

Saved my Bacon

Thanks....... could of got in a mess there eh :)
Explains why no body does this, isnt hardly worth removing 2 inches of barrel and I wouldnt want the hassle of ordering a short barrel and then all the paper work that will inevitably accompany such a project
It was just a thought, and once again the depth of knowledge on this site amazes me :)

Easier and cheaper to simply buy one of the VZ-58's that have been "Krinked" short!

An SKS with two inches chopped off is still a pretty long carbine.

I had the barrel of my SKS chopped. Mainly because I wanted to get rid of the bayonet lug and front sight. The gunsmith only chopped off 1.25 inches just to be sure although he could have taken off 1.5 inches.

Ran into a guy in the bush, a while ago, that was carrying one of these.

Factory length 16 " barrel and overall length of more than 26 ". Didn't ask the legal status, :D but seems to me it should comply with the law, given all the other short barreled guns out there.
Grizz

Semi-auto centre fires must have a barrel 18.5" long or greater and be 26" or greater in OAL to be non-restricted.
