Minimum barrel length on a Ruger 10 22?

I think he got my point;). It depends on whose barrel it is anyways, some companies measure from the shoulder to muzzle some from the chamber end to muzzle. I was actually going to add that that measurement was barrel only not chamber but I figured most readers would realize that. I doubt he is finding a 7.5-8.5" barrel anyways without getting Dlask to one off one for him.

The official legal way to measure a barrel is to drop a rod down the barrel to the breechface with the breech closed, and measure to the face of the muzzle.

I think its over all length.

what does overall length really mean though. I'm getting conflicting answers even from gun shop owners. BECAUSE... From butt stock to tip of barrel is not always over-all length like i stated... if the barrel is recessed inside the front of the stock. Nobody is able to answer this. Must be something nobody has done before

If the stock sticks past the front of the barrel, then the front of the stock to the butt of the stock is where you measure.
Just put measuring tape out, lay the gun down, and figure out the maximum distance between two points you can measure on the gun.

well that's exactly what i'm hoping for and i hope that is accurate :p Thanks. BTW You wouldn't believe the different replies i'm getting from people in the business. I asked the same question at a store a few days ago and the guy looked at me like i was crazy and said i need to measure from the tip of the barrel no matter how long the stock was WTF. W/E. Thanks for your reply!

But that really begs the question, why would you want a gun with a barrel shorter than the stock? Makes no sense to me. I can see flush with the stock but not shorter.

because i already have the parts and i want it to remain unrestricted. I dont have access to 20 different socks and barrels to pick and chose from

i am really interested in building the smallest possible (26") and non-restricted ruger 10/22..
What would yo recommand as a good stock for that kind of project.. ?

Always liked Nine's(CGN user) 10/22

I just think having the stock extend beyond the barrel is really dangerous as you can very easily put your hand in front of the muzzle accidently and destroy a few fingers or worse, not a real good idea:eek:

would be no different than this minus the noveske

I think I have to disagree to a small degree with this. If you measure to the front of the receiver and then subtract that from 26 inches a barrel of the resulting length would be too short. About 1 inch usually of the barrel is recessed into the action so I would do what is recommended here but add 1 inch to the difference and that should keep it legal.

The Barrel length really has nothing to do with it , The rimfire firearm must be 26"+ plain and simple .

the more i'm reading the more i see you're right. Barrel length has NOTHING to do with O/A length. If your stock is at least 26" you can have a 6" 8" 10" or w/e length barrel even if it's shorter than the length of the stock. So even if the stock covers the entire barrel as long as the stock itself is over 26" it's fine. Here, i drew a picture finally

It would be hard to put your hand in front of the muzzle on that gun with all the stuff there so not the same thing at all IMO. Just because you can do something doesn't make it smart. On the gun you were describing building placing your hand in front of the muzzle would be very easy just like on that 10/22 you pictured above, not smart.
