Guys.

Can anyone suggest a minimum power magnificatin for 900m f-class. I am considering the Bushnell 4200 6x-24x 1/4 MOA DOT Reticule. I am also considering the 8x-32x but I am not sure the Multi-X reticule is suitable as it may cover the target at that distance.

Thanks

Stewie

The Bushnell is a great scope, but it doesn't have enough elevation inside to handle that kind of range. That's the one failing of that otherwise great scope.

That may or may not do it. The Bushnell has something terrible like 25 minutes of TOTAL internal elevation. Out of an abundance of caution, I wouldn't want to shoot anywhere near 1000 yards without at least a 20-25 minute Picatinny-type rail if I was using that Bushnell scope.

Any suggestions then? My budget is $600-$700. Preferably variable power so that I can try to dial out mirage. I have shot with a Sightron 36X and while optically very nice, a little limiting if conditions are not good.

A lot of people swear by the Leupold 6.5-20, and I see them advertised used on this forum all the time in your price range.

A good friend of mine who does F-Class shooting uses a couple of older Weaver target scopes with the Micro-Trac adjustment. He has a fixed-power 16x and fixed-power 20x. Both are extremely bright and clear and they are completely repeatable in their adjustments. You often see these scopes coming for sale on the used market and they are well within your budget.

I'm not much of an F-Class shooter, but I put a Leupold 12x with a 1/4 moa dot and target knobs on my 6.5x55, and I love that scope. I wouldn't hesitate to use it at 1000 yards, but some people believe 16x is the best all-around power for long-range match shooting.

I have used 14 power at 900 meters, and done well. But I have moved on up to 36X now, despite mirage. I prefer target definition, and deal with the mirage as it happens. With the new .5moa Vbull being used, a small multi-x or small dot is required in order to visually center the Vbull. A 1/4moa dot would pretty much cover the new Vbull at 900 meters. I think some of the target model Weavers feature 1/8moa dot reticles at a reasonable price. Never used one, so I can't recommend them.

Stewie,
I would suggest precise clarity of lenses first ,precise and consistent adjustments second and last power range.
Remember TR shooter's can hit the bull with open sites so power range is last consideration.
Some scopes are known for their better lens systems and consistency in adjustments.
Variable power and Adjustable focus is also IMHO very important although others I know shoot straight power.
Some may suggest 1/8 MOA adj is important but 1/4 will work fine.
Adding 20 moa via tapered base or Burris Z ring inserts is almost a given. You never want your scope elv adjustments near top or bottom of range as it minimizes your windage range.
Since it's winter and a few months to go before F Class starts up again take your time and try and locate a used scope to fit your budget rather than new.Generally you can get more scope for your buck.
I've shot B&L,Burris,Leupold,Sightron and Nightforce.I favour the Nightforce and Leupold's for my eyes.
Good luck

I have B&L 4000s on two of my LR rifles (308 and 240 Gibbs, 8-32 and 6-24, respectively), both set up with Burris offset ring inserts to allow for proper elevation adjustment. This gives me enough out at 700 meters, but runs out shortly after that. I think a 25 moa base will be required to get it working properly at 1000, as I already have 20 moa in the inserts. I have run the B&Ls with a Near base out to 1200, so it's doable, but your base zero will be between 200 and 300 meters. - dan

I consider 15x to be minimum and 20 to 24 to be ideal.
I use a 6-24 on one rifle but have an elevation adjustment built into the base. With this rifle (6BR) and scope (a Weaver, by the way.) I can reach 600 meters easily. I then adjust the base up to shoot 7,8, and 900. Regards, Bill.

10x is terrible to me after getting used to 24x. I find being able to see the center of the target is an advantage.

How about the Weaver CLASSIC K SERIES 15X40. I personally like the idea of fixed power for the sake of simplicity and ruggedness. The Leupold FX-III 12x40mm Adj. Obj. Target also caught my eye but I thought it may be slightly under powered. Who sells Sightron in Canada that has a web site.

For F-Class shooting, consider 3X magnification for every 100 yards you shoot. A 24X or 25X for 1000 would be my personal minimum. I am moving towards fixed 32 X for my 1000 yard guns.
