minimum scope clearance between barrel

Wow.
If you have daylight and there isn't 2" of tube hanging out the front of the forward ring you're fine.
That is an extreme spread, so I would suspect (and having bedded an x-bolt) that you have bedding issues.
Bed the thing, then try forend pressure if other ammo doesn't work.
I stabilize 55gr ballistic tips just fine in my 1-14" barrel.

Could be you bought a hangover Monday rifle as well. Never know...

I doubt that the Inaccuracy issue is related to where the scope is sitting, as long as it doesn't touch the barrel. However, if you do a lot of bench shooting, be prepared for occasional blurry view due the hot air rising from a hot barrel.

UPDATE: So I took the scope and all the mounts off of the gun. Re assembled everything checking to make sure it was all tight. I still had one box of the winchester 55gr crap, I decided to buy 2 boxes of federal with the 40gr ballistic tips, to make sure my gun likes the 40 gr before I reload a bunch. So I went to the range and figured I'd use the winchester 55's to get on paper while sighting in, then switch to the federal 40's to zero it. Well after 30 min I was on paper and still getting shotgun like patterns with the winchester ammo. minimum 6" groups. Not happy at all I switched guns to let the barrel cool. Switched to the federal ammo and had it zeroed and shot a 1.25" for the first 5 shot group. Just fine for my shooting with a 6x scope. So I breathed a huge sigh of relief and headed home. Now to start loading the 40's I have at the reloading bench...

doesnt surprise me cheap 223 ammo is crap. I thought something was wrong with my new gun i was using american eagle ammo. It wouldnt shoot straight till i fed it regular ammo im talking 6 inc groups down to less than 2. I found that very cold weather really affected the american eagle ammo.

I like a little space like 1/4". when I had a gun with minimal scope clearance I found every so often I would get twigs wedged between the barrel and scope.

Glad you got it sorted out.

for future reference 3 sheets of 20 weight paper should be able to fit between the scope and barrel, any closer and they can contact each other during firing. It has less affect on accuracy than it does on scope life when the bell and barrel touch.

When I remounted the scope I put it just slightly forward so that there is a hair more clearance than before, so with the configuration it is in now I'm not worried about the height.

I just thought about that, on my model 16 325 WSM the recoil slowly shifted the scope to wear it was hitting somewhere, I ended up putting a little bit of glue on it after relocating it (it's a vortex - warranty shouldn't be compromised) and it has been fine ever since.

This may not matter now but you did clean the packing grease out of the gun, bore included, before you shot it didn't you? I have seen too many brand new guns hurt or ruined by people not cleaning them out before shooting or by oiling the barrel after cleaning and then failing to run a dry patch down the bore before shooting. Oil does not compress very well at all in a gun barrel and can actually cause microscopic bulges in the bore which can cause all sorts of accuracy and contaminant buildup problems like "coining"

Cheap, CHEAP , cheap. Before u start bedding and free floating and adding pressure point buy some quality ammo and your groups will likely shrink in half . I don't get why guys buy good quality rifles and scopes and then buy the cheapest ammo they can find it makes no sense

I have a Browning A-Bolt which shot 10" groups at 100 yds with factory 150 FMJ ammo (pretty embarrassing at the range).
Started reloading them, just run of the mill reloads using 150gr FMJ and groups came down to about 1.25MOA.

Friend had another browning not a-bolt which shot sub MOA with factory.

Unsure why this happens, however try reloading.

Sincerely,
on-ca
