so i posted this on another forum but ill try here as the audience is much larger.so I have heard the rule of thumb that i have been using that the bullet should be seated at least one bullet diameter into the neck, How crucial is this? Trying to load VLDs for my 25-06 in order to stretch out to the lands i only achieve about 0.180 into the neck so quite a bit short of 0.257. Good to go? recommendations?

I load my 257 Wby with about .090" of full caliber bullet in the neck (not including boattail) and I have no problems. If you are going to seat real shallow one must be careful that you have enough neck tension to hold the bullet and be careful handling them. If you're loading VLDs I'm guessing these are for paper punching so you should be good. My 300 Wby is only about .150" into the neck and I've carried these loads all over the world without problems...........

There is no reason for excessive run out initially, your loading technique and dies will determine this. However the possibility definitely increases with the more handling the ammo gets. Have you tried seating for a full caliber + in the neck and checked your accuracy, you may not need to seat your bullets out this far to get acceptable hunting accuracy.
