Federal public safety minister Marco Mendicino is in Yellowknife, Łútsël K’é and Behchokǫ̀ this week to make budget announcements – and talk guns.

In February, the federal government abandoned amendments to proposed firearms legislation that Indigenous groups and others, including NWT Liberal MP Michael McLeod, had opposed.

McLeod said in December the amendments, which introduced a list of long guns to be banned, were “a bit blurry for me and a little bit concerning,” and Bill C-21 as a whole would not have his support until he was “completely convinced” northern hunters, sport shooters and trappers will be unaffected.

On Wednesday, Mendicino promised that nothing in Bill C-21 will affect northern Indigenous hunting rights.

The minister went further, repeating an accusation that Conservatives have engaged in “disinformation” by suggesting that the bill would have that effect.

“[They] say we’re going after hunters and the like. We’re not,” Mendicino told Cabin Radio.

Pressed on whether his trip to the NWT is motivated in part by local dissatisfaction at the way C-21 has rolled out – McLeod said his own party’s amendments to the bill took him by surprise, and the Assembly of First Nations vowed to oppose the legislation – Mendicino said he had come “to strengthen relationships” and would use meetings this week to “really have that direct conversation and to make sure that we’re aligning the experiences with our legislation.”

He also suggested Bill C-21 could be used to tackle the advent of 3D-printed weapons, which have begun to make appearances in Yellowknife and represent a separate frontier in the fight against illegal guns, though that would require a further amendment.

Meanwhile, Mendicino said he wants to “accelerate the process” of rolling out First Nations policing, which he said would allow First Nations in the North “to drive their own public safety initiatives, including and up to the creation of their own police services.”

Alberta’s Siksika Nation last year began moves to replace the RCMP with its own police service. A community policing pilot has been taking place in Fort Liard.

Mendicino said he hopes to table related legislation this year.

So are they are doing a race-based carve-out for one group, thereby granting exclusive access to firearms to a cultural group who did not invent them (cultural appropriation)?

Theyre gonna try - they also need the first nations community (government) on board to restrict citizens access to the "crown lands". This is a later part of the agenda but we can find examples of the behaviour already.

I find it "cute" how he apparently uses phrases like "Indigenous hunting rights" and then "Hunters, and the like" - as if they all refer to the same people. I suspect is to cause some "Hunters" to be mislead into thinking they somehow have that activity as a "right".

Only a fool would be "completely convinced" that firearm bans will not effect hunters, trappers and sport shooters. What is the government going to try, to buy the support of the indigenous groups?

This Indigenous man WILL NOT COMPLY

Pretty much anyone can be bought, if the price is right.

First Nations are probably only about 5% of firearms owners Canada wide.........getting sick and tired of them catering to the minority.

The rest of us might fall into these ranks?

All in all scrap C21, and the entire firearms act, move towards unregistering handguns and allowing full capacity mags

If even an idiot says they want gun control, you can bet they want all guns banned! For this wimp Minister that crapped his pants when he had the oppertunity to really fire one and see what it was like was scarred to even try and went home crying like a baby. To thede people gun bans mean just that BAN GUNA. No gun is safe when tied in with the elemination of hurting any animal.

That Minister is a lying snake.
Nothing he says is believable.
Hes a Liberal politician..and a sleazy one at that.

If their guarantee is that you can go out and buy a non-affected firearm to replace the now-banned firearm that you used to hunt with, I call BS. They said that after the May 2020 OIC, then the next ban affected replacement guns. Dont trust anything that Liberals promise in terms of respecting firearms owners or hunters. They showed their hand and proved how they roll when they tried to slip in the ridiculous and poorly thought out ammendments.

Yep, I remember when he made up a fake terrorist cell, that he claimed stole a truck full of guns and was taking it to Ottawa. When pressed, he had no evidence and no info to back it up. This guy will say and do anything to get what his party wants. I feel bad for those he opposed in a court of law, who knows how many documents this man altered and falsified to get ahead.
