i inherited a smoothbore that has a very minor ammount of pitting in it and i just sold it to someone. i disclosed the fact that it may have pitting to a small degree and knocked down the asking price substantially after it's discovery when i did the "sale" cleaning, but im wondering if there is any way i can lap this from the bore for the guy. i am looking into rust killer treatments to ensure it dosen't spread any more and have burnished it as best i could with a brass scouring pad. but is it wise to lap it further?
It shoots fine, and the slight apparent pitting dosent affect accuracy at all and the gun otherwise operates normally. but nevertheless i want to sell it with a clean conscience. to the naked eye it almost looks like slight fouling but the fact that i couldn't burnish it out leeds me to think it's pitting.
Any thoughts?

You can use a barrel hone, similar to a brake hone, but the finished job on the gun I had polished was no where near the quality one would see in a factory barrel. Besides, the individual who bought your gun might not want to wait until you've got a hone before he gets it.

You could try some JB bore cleaner on a bore brush with a sectioned steel cleaning rod chucked into an electric drill and spun while you work the brush back and forth through the bore, but this stuff is more for tough cleaning jobs than for polishing the bore. You could go a machine shop supply company and get a small can of fine or extra fine lapping compound that has coarser abrasives suspended in the grease than JB has. But when you use lapping compound, check the bore frequently to ensure you are not cutting too deeply.

If I were the buyer, I would tell you not to worry for a second. The gun shoots fine and you indicated the condition of the gun before selling and your price reflected this.

For me, a condition like this is more comestic than anything else and would be nothing to worry about.

Leave it as is. If you've disclosed the pitting, reduced the price and made the sale then send it as you've described it.

I'd rather have a gun with a little bit of pitting than have someone else take a brake hone to the bore. I can leave it as is or have someone I know clean up the barrel.
