minox za5 1.5-8x32 pre range review ***EDIT 12/3/13

I belive you could be right but I also believe the glass is made in Germany

Nothing wrong with Minox, I have a compact spotter that's decent for the price. I believe they use Schott glass, which is a German company, but that really doesn't mean much as many companies use Schott glass (including my Whirpool range cooktop). What ultimately matters is the grind, polish and coatings each company gives the lenses.

made in Germany , assemble in the U.S..

I was going to ship it to us for repaire, as I was packaging it I got a call from the Canadian distributor. he was apologising for the delay, asking me ti ship it to him in Ontario and would sjip me a new one.

What's the distributor in Canada?

the good the bad and the ugly!

***Update***

Ok lets start the ugly; I got my brand new (second one) in the mail today, first thing I notice a new scope coat, like I needed 2:p, and wen I grab the scope what I notice? FFS the eye piece is as loose as the one sent back!!! At this point I am pist. Now I think are you kidding me! He must've sent me back the same one so I call him and he check the serial and he says its not the same one, in the mean time I notice the turrets are at zero so nop not mine.

The bad : it cost me 30 $ to ship the first one now he says well don't put insurance on it it will only cost 15 $ . So I up to 45 $ in shipping on this

The good: so as minor consolation he offered me a 70 $ knife to make up for my troubles. Plus he said he is shippi g the other new scope that he inspected this time before shipping tonight and its good.

So I have not gave up yet. But this is the last time if this, the third one, is not good, a keeper I'm done.

Il keep you posted should have it by next weekend.

Good call. Ship your scope to the US sans paperwork and that could likely be the last you see of it.

You spoke of the eye relief. Are you able to put your cheek on the rifle in the natural position and run through the magnification range without a change in the eye relief? On the face the scope sounds interesting. Excellent magnification range, affordable price. That said if the QC is spotty and there are eye relief issues then it's a non-starter for me. Too bad if the scopes are shoddy...Minox has an excellent reputation for quality. Mind you, that was when the Germans were doing everything, not just stamping the name on it. I wonder if Porsche will start producing a made in the USA product at a cheap price point.

Well as a surprise I recive unit number 3 today.

Well as of now all seems good ,I will try to go to the shooting range tomorow or this weekend see if it comes loose as the first one did! This is minox last chance with me, if the first 3 one's fail the 4 not going to work so...

Here is the scope and the free 70 $ knife ( I was told??) What do you think about the knife?

Nop just playing with it the scope develop the same problem as the 2 others! I believe its a chronic problem with that specific batch that was shipped to the Canadian distributor.

Well the good news is that this was the last of that scope at the Canadian distributor.

Also I have sparred him the burden of taking care of me and taking a hit on shipping as it is no fault of his own, I have contacted minox directly. They have sent me a return label for the scope and will try to sent it asap.

I know I said that was the last time but might as well continue at least I am taking the bad units of the market!

I will keep you posted wen I get the next one from minox lol

Ive got two of these scopes now and have a 3rd one on its way to me. Ive never had this or any other issue with any of them.

Glad to hear ,id like to finally get a good one I really like the concept of that scope.

I've had one of these mounted on a Ruger #1 .303 Brit. for over 2 years now. It's been a great scope and I've had no issues so far. Hopefully it will work out for you in the long run.
