I had a chance to try out my "new to me" FN Browning Trombone.

What a fun little rifle. Sure can visualize standing in front of a old shooting gallery at the fair.

Just plink'n away... trying to win that Kewpie Doll or stuffed animal for the girl friend.

Anyway...

Had 3 mis-fires in a row.

Rifle is not dirty or worn out. But before I start to tear her down...thought I'd ask.

Anything I should be watch'n for?

Are you using .22 LR? The rifle is designed for .22 long ( as noted on the barrel). It really likes .22 short HP high velocity. It will shoot LR, but jams and mis-fires.

i have shot many bricks of .22lr out of my trombone without issue. Maybe the ammo? i have had some winchester bulk pack that had constant duds.. i'd certainly recommend trying different ammo. most of my guns like the 36 grain federal bulk stuff.

Going to have a look at it tomorrow...but kinda thinking around those lines...
Loaded the rounds in another rifle and the worked fine...
Don't think it's from fouling but maybe.
Thinking pin or maybe spring.

Have you dropped a little oil into the hammer spring well?? Most people never lubricate that part of the rifle so it maybe a little dry.

Some oil may improve things. Also make sure the area around the chamber is free from fouling and that the firing pin moves freely in the channel in the bolt.

I shoot .22 LR in mine without issue.

Got bored watching TV. Decided to dig into things.
Once I got it apart things didn't look too bad.

Pic 1- You can see a bit of wear from the hammer hitting the back of the firing pin.
Not bad for a 93 yr old rifle??? Not sure.
Pic 2- I found some burs in the bottom of the hammer where it was milled. I think this was stopping the pin from coming forward all the way. Now the pin seems to be sticking out more.
Pic 3- You can see now the pin is flush with the hammer. I should have taken a pic to show how the were not even before I started. Hope that's all it was.
Pic 4 Firing pin cleaned up. Doesn't look too bad either. But it would be nice to have a new one to compare it to.

Hopefully I'll get a chance to test her out this week.

I have "sharpened" up the firing pin tip on a few and that improved the misfiring. A thinner "wedge" smacking the brass...
