This is an older bolt action(50s?) but in seldom fired condition. I like to use all my guys at least once during the hunting season and today was this ones turn.
The issue I have with It is it doesn't always fire the shell, might be the first one might be the third. Today I missed a rabbit sitting at 20' because the first shell didn't fire. It's like the rabbit knew, let me try 3 times one that shell as soon as I chambered another shell he bolted and I missed.
The primer looks dented as much as the non fired shell as a fired shell. I was thinking it might be bummed up a bit or a weak spring?
Just baffles me why the primer looks well dented. It does it with 23/4" or 3" shells.
I'll post a picture of the shell in a bit.

The primer is well dented because it was smacked 3 times... after the first non fire it is quite possible it will never fire as the priming compound has been damaged... try some more ammo before panicking...

First picture an unfired shell, was hit twice but even after one strike it was well dented.
2nd picture a fired shell.
Sorry for the late pictures had to remember photobucket stuff.
Sorry 2cd picture another unfired shell.

Here's a fired shell,I always take them out the woods...if findable

Are the innards of the bolt clean?

I'm not sure, going to surf the net and take her apart. The gun sat for probably 30 plus years before I inherited it. The oil on it looked pretty tarnished but I thought if it was hitting the primer hard enough to dent it, things should go boom....guess not always in this case.

Thought ammo as well because the first time it happened was using the shells that came with it, probably 30 plus years old.
I bought some new 3 inch shells last year and same issue. I normally use a 20 gauge pump or 22 but like all my stuff to work. Going to Canadian tire to look for some type solvent...hopeing it's just a bit bummed up.

Soak the whole bolt in lacquer thinner or acetone and blow it dry.. do that a few times and then lube it well with lighter fluid and blow it dry... that should get it going if it is old dried oil...

If it is a weak spring that's another problem.

Thanks...will varsol be okay?
If not I will have to go back to town.

Varsol should do it but not as quickly as the other stuff.

Work it as much as possible while wer, blow it out and repeat unless you can get the bolt right apart and clean it out with patches aor bridges.

Tried different brands of ammo? How old is the stuff you are trying? Just another thing to try.

First forgive me for my explanation of what I am seeing.(terms, pieces etc)
I took the bolt and noticed right away someone else has had it apart. Look like someone had a pair of pliers on the firing pin and scored it up a little trying to take the "bolt" off that holds the spring. I can hook a finger nail on the scoring and that bolt was on really tight( I needed pliers to take it off. Looks like the threads were messed up alittle(3 or so) so took a measure looks like a 40/ inch, just don't have a 40 die home. It will thread back on just wanted to clean it up a little.
Does this screw bolt determine how far the firing pin sticks out?
I took some emery cloth to the burrs smoothed them out some...blueing is off should I re blue?

.055 to. 065 inches for firing pin to stick out?
Does this seem right for a shotgun....got it off the web
Is it possible the firing pin was out to far?
Sorry didn't take a measurement before disassembly.
.065"s isn't very far , not even 2mm

If it was too far you'd probably pierce the primer. Would have been nice to know what it was before. 1.65 mm could be about right if its got a good firm hit.

You have any other shot guns to compare to? They should all be about the same.

Yup,wish I looked at it better before i disassembled but how that "cup screw nut" was tightened it had to stick out 4/5mm.i have it at approximately 2mm now, going to give her a try tomorrow.
