As some of my friends here know we bought a Field-bred Springer a while ago. After 20 years of hunting with Labs - some good, some so-so, and one excellent boy that will never be equaled - we decided to "down-size" and get a mid-sized canine. Here is Miss Maggie who is about 15 weeks old now.

Nice looking pup. And, I see you've had some good luck with 4 legged hunting companions. I have to laugh at my track record in that regard! I've taken in two goldens in need of new homes with the intention of hunting with them. But alas, it was not meant to be! Bud was epileptic, and if he were to take a seizure on a retrieve he would have drowned before I could get to him. That was an unacceptable possibility for me, so I chose to enjoy his company as a best friend. I lost Bud to cancer 3 years ago and now I have Chester who is very robust, healthy, an excellent retriever...and gun shy. In fact all sudden loud noises scare him. Oh well, I am not one of those people who are too popular to enjoy another friend! So, Chester has assumed the role of best friend. In any case, enjoy your future days afield with your new hunting companion, I'm sure they will be memorable.

Congrats on the new pup! I much like you have had & hunted over labs and 3 years ago my wife wanted a Brittany spaniel, so we got one and he's been awesome, the same colors as your pup.

That's kind of funny... we've got 3 britts right now and I keep telling my wife that we should up-size our next dog to a chocolate lab! She like bigger dogs, had goldens in the past, but isn't sure about a lab. I argue that by the time we need a new dog my upland hunting days will be winding down and it will be time to settle down in a blind and hunt ducks & geese with a lab.

Anyway, congrats on the new pup - spaniels are great dogs!

Great looking pup. Our new springer pup arrived 2 weeks ago. She is also a field bred dog. We look forward to hunting with her next year. We have had springers for 50 years. Did she come from the breeder in Lac La Hache?

Pictures from today.

She is now just over 10 months old and is starting to fill out. She is not the biggest dog but she is as solid as a rock and has "drive" to spare!

How do you train them for hunting?

If they are bred correctly working dogs will hunt based on their genetics. Good breeders will select desirable traits and work to reinforce them in their lines.

Field-bred Springers for example want - or rather they NEED - to chase birds and rabbits. (Sort of like a crack addict looking for his next fix. ;) ) The instinct to pursue has been bred into them over hundreds of generations. They only need to be trained for basic obedience, work close to the hunter, sit at the shot, and retrieve to hand.

To the OP well done! there is only one kind off bird dog in my eyes and it's a English Springer, great character, more energy than several others dogs put together and if they have there natural want/need to hunt then they can be trained into awsome hunting companions.
Get her onto a decoy and some training scent as soon as you can, and excersize excersize excersize, we live in the bald ass prairies my springer runs all over our 10acres all day every day, even now in -25 and still wants to run/ train when I get home. during the season the only time he's tired is after 3-4 days of continuous hunting.

Great analogy "canine vesion of a crack addict"
