Missing Deer Head

Good Morning

In the fall of 2007, I was lucky enough to harvest my biggest White Tail deer to date. I was super excited and not entirely sure what I needed to do next, as I had never harveested anything big enough to even consider taking to the taxidermist. I contacted a local taxidermist, cold called him out of the yellow pages. He was super helpful and explained what I needed to do to properly cape out the buck. When I completed the caping I transported the head and cape to the taxidermist here in Calgary. We talked for a over an hour as he took me through the shop and showed me many fine examples of his work. He then informed me that it could take up to a year to complete my mount, he filled out a AFG Taxidermist Record, gave me a copy and sent me on my way. I left feeling glad, both about how helpful he had been and about how good his mounts looked.

Now that was 7 years ago, I have not received my head back yet!!!! I have contacted the Taxidermist on several occasions, every time I contact him he tells me the same thing, "I will be working on heads next week (month), thanks for your patience and I will contact you when it is ready"

Now I am starting to think that I have been played, the only good thing is I have not invested any cash into this deal. With the amount of time that has passed I could have learned how to perform taxidermy myself!!!! At this point I would like to get the rack back, I am certain that my cape is either no longer viable or has been used, so I am not looking for that, but I would like the rack, so I could at least do a plaque mount.

Now this was not a record book deer, so I don't think that the rack has been stolen, but I was wondering if anyone has had any similar situation, or how I could go about getting my property returned. Thanks in advance any help is greatly appreciated.

I would have been on his doorstep a long time ago and demanded it back, book deer or not. I would not take no as an answer, or any other excuse...

I suggest you do the same.

Who was it?

I would do the same. 7 years is at least 5 years too long to wait for a deer mount.

How the hell does a business stay in business by warehousing stuff for 7 years FOR FREE?
I've seen this with gunsmiths also.
Meanwhile, the huge department stores realize the value of store space, and blow out old stock mercilessly.

7 years!?!?!? HOLY MOLY I'd be on his door step 5 and half years ago demanding my mount back. If you can't complete it in 1.5 years MAX, Then you have no business taking any more work or maybe quit altogether if it takes you that long.

There is a taxidermist around here (not overly big, but does decent amount of mounts) His turn around time is about 3-5 months. He does an excellent job and will be getting my bucks from now on.

Taxidermists moreso even than some Gunsmiths can be notorious for how slow they are. I'd arrange to meet and either leave with your deer parts or observe that it has been started and is going well. If he has already invested time in it, he'll be motivated to complete it and be paid.

There may be another story here. Years ago, my BiL and I cooperated on a 6' black bear. First one for either of us. We had advice on how to prep the hide, and wanted it prepared as a rug. He went to see the fellow a few times asking about the job. Eventually, the guy confessed that the hide had been ruined in tanning and there was no point in trying to make anything with it. My BiL said thanks and retrieved a shabby patchy hidee. I felt very bad that the animal had died for nothing; the BiL felt bad because the fellow kept lying to him.

At the very least go and ask to see the rack and then you can discuss how 7 years seems reasonable to him if it is in fact still there

and also
i would take a photo of the deer you shot, just in case he tries to palm you off with another rack and a witness with you too.

7 years is no good luck charm if you ask me.
Time to either write it off and out the guy here and over in the OA site as well.
Then i would go see a Lawyer and see what your next recourse is ....
Even a talk with the people at the BBB may even offer you a glitter of hope...faint hope at best.
Got your receipt with down payment recorded on it?

That was a good read, it sounds like Clarence has a few problems keeping him from finishing his work in a timely fashion.

You have been extremely patient with this taxidermist. Personally I would attend his place of business, and instead of knocking on his door it would be his forehead. Retrieve your rack and have any money returned. Regardless the size of the rack this is a sentimental item that you will cherish in future years. Good luck!

Op, go knock his door down and get your rack back, a business should not operate like that.

It's well past time to go and retrieve your property. Head over, ask for it's return and a possible refund on the down payment. If he cannot or will not produce the antlers then it's time to talk to a lawyer, the BBB and possibly the police, depending on circumstances and legal advice.

I'm very nervous to use a taxidermist that hasn't done work for someone I know....
