I had an old bsa enfield style 30-06 given to me and I want to carry it in the bush but I don’t want a scope on it it is to thick on the property for that. Buuut the rear sight was removed before my time. Is there a measurement or any scientific way to find out what height of rear sight needs to be put in? Or am I going to be running on trial and error? Thanks

For height estimation you can put the rifle in a firm holder and look through the bore. Aim the centre of the bore at something about 100 M away. Taking care not to move the rifle, take a caliper and put the base of it in the slot for the sight. Extend the caliper until the height looks correct as if you were lining up the caliper with the front sight. I've done that and gotten very close. Most North american rifles have 3/8" dovetail grooves, but since BSA is British you must measure yours to be sure. The angle on the sides of the slot matters too. If 3/8" wide it will be standard angle as well.
