Hi folks,

I'm looking at picking up some cast projectiles for use in my .45LC and 45-70 (when they get here) and came across these two manufacturers. Is there a difference between their products? The .45LC will be used in CAS, so velocities won't be so great. The 45-70 on the other hand will be used to hunt. Thanks.

It says they are an approved ITAR manufacturer....their site doesn't list if they are set up as an FFL exporter though and no comments in the FAQ about international shipping.

You can hunt with both types. Some one will correct.me if i am wrong.
I guess your thinking better penetration with the bullet barn.

Yes, exactly. Also I don't want to drive them too fast and risk leading the barrel. Not so much a concern with CAS loads; more so with the 45-70. I don't cast, so I would need to buy the projectiles and if they're lead, my understanding is high speed = leading

I am waiting for my casting stuff to arrive but will be trying 405gr 45-70 then powder coating. I should be able to push cast to faster speeds without leading.

I have done this for 9mm and 45acp with good.results at jacket speeds.

My experience with hunting with a 45-70 says you don't have to drive them fast. I've shot a few deer with the 45-70, a couple with cast pure lead but most with the Bullet Barn's 350 or 405 gr. I have yet to recover a 45-70 bullet from a deer, every one was a complete pass through and none were faster than a black powder equivalent load 11-1400 fps.. The furthest shot was 245 paces on a big bodied 32" wide Mule and none of the deer went more than 4 or 5 jumps before piling up. The most important thing to know when hunting a 45-70 is to know the baseball pitch trajectory as the yardage lengthens out.

For the Cas bullets, I use the cheapest I can find. BB makes a very good product and I have previously used BB a lot but anybody local to you with an Ammo Caster or Castmaster set up can make an acceptable bullet without the shipping charges. I'm currently buying 230 gr .45 bullets 1000 count for$ 85.00

I shot a few boxes of Bullet barn bullets in my 45-70 guide gun before I started casting. well cast and very clean. Some 350s at and 450s. I also have some 400 grain gas checked bullets that I have to load into shortened brass because the ogive is too fat to fit in my chamber. I never experienced much leading at all, surprisingly, despite pushing the 450s to 1550fps. Some folks say their bullets are too hard and small diameter and lead barrels, but it wasn't my experience, even driving the plain base bullets very hard.
I've really just shot at water jugs and steel plates, so I can't vouch for paper accuracy, but they hit what I aimed at. Maybe your best bet is to order some of each and see which ones you prefer? you can order 1/2 boxes or less if you ask nicely, from what I remember.
