I was in a local hunting store on Friday and saw what i though was a Mosin Nagant M38, turns out after a little searching and researching i found out its an M44 that someone cut the bayonet off of and ground it out, the bayo barrel band is still in place, its dated 1953, and its got a cutout along the stock. The rifles in great shape, though i prob paid a little too much for it, whats a good price on something like this? Being that its prob not gonna be worth much as a collector rifle im gonna think about putting a scope mount on it and use it as a hunting rifle. Ill post pics later tonight when i get a chance, i wont do any further bubbaing if its something particularly rare or desirable.

Sounds like a Polish M44 that had an unfortunate run in with Bubba who simply did not not appreciate the pig sticker on the end of his carbine :D.

Here's the pics i promised what ya think??
Some pics of the whole Ruskie family to start.

So whats ya guys think, bubba'd beyond repair so i should scope it, or not too bad so leave it as is??

Damn Just my luck to find something uncommon and its already been messed with, oh well im already in love with this rifle and i got it for what i think is a decent price so im pleased. Definitely gotta get it blooded this fall i think on the deer hunt, which is why i was thinking about adding a scope but if this is a little more on the rare side ill be leaving it alone, maybe get a no smith scout mount if i feel i need a scope. Range report later this week i hope.

Hungarian M44's are a bit uncommon. Yours appears in pretty decent shape as well. Why not replace the front sight/bayo mount sleeve? I think they are pinned and pressed on. Wouldn't be matching of course but at least it would be the proper configuration.

JBmauser that might be an idea, ill look at that down the road, looks like the band the bayo was attached to is made into the barrel though, ill haveanother look before bed. Im sure im gonna enjoy shooting this this week hoping it can hit well, be a lot easier to maneuver through the woods then my 91/30 i was thinking about using, gonna be so hard chosing a hunting rifle, i like em all a lot, might have to take it to Alberta next time i go and get a few coyotes with it to.
Im curious how you know its Hungarian, my knowledge of these rifles is limited but i do enjoy learning about em.

Hungarian have the 02 code stamped on barrel, stock and many others parts too.

Oh i can Guarantee thats goona happen, whatever else i do or dont do to it ill def be holdin onto it, first step is to see how it shoots, bore looks a little fuzzy and a bit of surface rust, mostly from being stored for some time i expect as the outside is nearly in the white but in good shape otherwise, so ill see how i feel down the road im not gonna rush into and modifications that ill end up later regreting.

i love my m44 i took a deer with mine it was just iron sighted and i left the bayo on of corse it comes in handy for when you taking a break flip it out and stick it in the ground

id say it would be worth around 200... and i wouldnt mount a scope on it go too brassstacker.com they have one for m44 and m38s heres a review by "nutandfancy" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOmqUdhJm_8&lr=1 i bought one for my 9130, came in 2 weeks just havent had the time too take a torch too my pins holding the sight on as it seems when it was refurbed the russians soldiered my pins grrrr

Nice that i found somethign different, i was hoping to come across a pre bubbaed mosin to modify into a hunting rifle. I got an argument with my Bro in law that surplus rifles arent up to par with ones made today, i disagree totally and want a mosin to scope and put a boyds stock on maybe clean up and tune the trigger, no real major mods just minor ones . I dont think i'll be able to do it with this one, i like it too much, funny how that happens. HAHA
