mK II Snider Enfield

Hi Folks,
A friend gave me this snider Enfield. I understand it is a MK II with upgraded latch and steel barrel. I am looking for information on the other markings. I assume DC is Dominion on Canada? I have the bayonet too but it is pretty corroded.

Yes DC is a Dominion of Canada militia stamp. The regimental stamps are a little bit hard to read but it looks like your Snider was issued to the 39th Norfolk Battalion of Rifles out of Simcoe Ontario. The action is actually a MKIII.

Ok. Thank you. I thought it was a MK III but was told otherwise. On top of the stock near there butt it says 39 and has a 278 underneath it.

Mk2’s were iron barrels from enfield rifled muskets and iron actions. But as long as it’s half way decent chaps it still be shootable.

The spring actuated piston that locks the action is only used on MKIII actions though commercial Sniders will probably not have the Roman numeral stamped on top of the action only the military ones will. The stamp on the top of your gun does look like MKII at least from the photo. Now that you confirmed the numbers stamped on the gun it was definitely issued to the Norfolk Rifles and had the rack number 278.

When you zoom in you can see it looks a bit more like a III
