Hi guys, I'm looking for some advice on a shorter barreled AR. It will be sitting most likely with an eotech or red dot on it. I've read a lot of posts and arguments about not going shorter than 11.5" barrels in the .225/556 calibers and now I'm torn between the MK18 and the m4v7s. Is there that significant of a difference between the 10.3" and the 11.5" lengths? Also are they pretty much the same rifle minus the barrel lengths and hand guards?

I will think either one is fine. I won't worry about the difference between 10.5 or 11.5.

Personally, I will pick the MK18 because it is easier to set things up on a fully railed hand guard if there is only 9" to work with. The slim line and m-Lok thing does not give enough fine location adjustment if you have a load of stuff that need to be put on this kind of gun. The sling, pressure switch, LAD, back up front sight, IR/white light are pretty crowded inside a 9" space so you want to be able to move things one rail slot at a time until you are happy.

The DD MK18 has an ENORMOUS gas port 0.80

Soooo... it cycles almost all ammo fine. The LMT 10.5 MK18 upper is slightly pickier. (smaller port) Better for 5.56 ammo vs cheap .223 wolf/pmc etc
Colt MK18 uppers are more inline with the LMT.
The 11.5 gives you more dwell time and is considered more reliable, but again, barrel make, ammo and buffer weight can play a part in reliability.

I just purchased the new V7S, and am very impressed.

I'm no expert, but as far as I can tell there's no major difference between the V7S and Mk18 except an extra inch of barrel or so. DD was offering the 11.5" barrel to military and law enforcement only previously, but expanded it to the civilian market at SHOT Show this year.

I appreciate the V7S's slim M-LOK handguard and the weight savings. I've always liked the Mk18, but let's be honest: Few of us actually end up needing all the rail space.

The V7S allows me to put nice rubber grip inserts along the handguard, while still setting up any accessories as needed with M-LOK accessories or M-LOK rail adapters.

The V7S is just arriving in Canada, so you'll have a much easier time finding an Mk18 if you're looking to buy right away.
