MK4 #1 guru's,what is this thing? *VIDEO*

I just picked this Mk4 #1 at a super cheap price.Problem is i have no clue what these things are worth or much about what models came from where,or if this is even an Enfield.
Heres a video(had to film,crap lighting here for pics)
Please fill me in on this thing! :) Even if you only know bits and pieces,post it up.
I forgot to mention,the serial # is an H and 4 numbers,it has a sideways L and a strait up B on the top of the barrel close to the receiver,and a J and a B on the bottom in front of the magazine,each letter is on opposite sides of a little loop,But No other markings than what you see.
 
It is a "sporterized" No4 Mk1. It looks like the barrel is uncut so you could get a complete wood set and bands to restore it.

From the serial number H###X, sounds like you have a BSA-Shirley made in 1944 but Stratton's No4 book says it that it should have 5 numbers. Unless that is a R or N before the serial number.

Anyhow, you have a $75 to $150 gun. IMHO.
 
You have a good rear sight, which is better than some other sporterized.

Get the headspace checked before shooting it, especially if you reload.

I don't think it's been shot in ages,the barrel is packed full of grease..i will have it checked

The pull through is not for that rifle. the correct one has a much heavier cord and a different weight.
Fortunately the barrel has not been buggered, so restoration is not a problem. As stated above, Replacement forends, handguards, and barrel bands are available. I should think restoring it to milspec would be a very good idea and would certainly increase the value.

Headspace on the No4 was adjusted by different length boltheads ranging from 0 to 4. On assembly, whatever bolt head gave the correct headspace was fitted. So it either came that way from the factory or it was adjusted by an armourer at a later date.


Oh by the way, that little loop on the triggerguard is for tying the canvas reciever cover to the rifle so it didn't get lost when you unsnapped it.
 
Cleaned out the grease packed barrel to find an absolutely mint bore,looks like it's worth fixing up..
So no one knows where it's from or who made it?

I have to ask. What will happen if he doesn't check the headspace before shooting it? I often see this posted about LE's but nobody ever seems to explain the dire consequences of not doing so. 'Enquiring' minds want to know:confused:

Hi

Safety margin designed into the headspace setup. There are a number of factors that all add up to make the gun come apart. Its a matter of how many of them come together when you pull the trigger on your rifle.

For the $10 or so it costs for the check, it's well worth it, even with free health care ....
