Hey Gang...

I've had this rifle for a few months now, so I thought I post a review and range report for all those who may be considering one.

Review:

I purchsed my ######## MkIII from Mick at SMGInternational.net for the sum of about $1550 shipped. Now I know most CGN's are thinking "that's a lot of cash for a chunk of metal tube!". The way I figured it was; having had missed the prohib bus by a few months, I cannot ever own all the dream prohibs that I want, the most desired being the Thompson SMG. Well, the next most recognizable WWII SMG, besides the MP38/MP40 (...of which are available at Marstar for a tidy sum...) would be the Sten. I figured that if I can't legally own a Tommy, a non-prohib Sten would be a nice consolation...

Anyhoo, the MkIII (my personal favourite style) arrived and I was very pleased with item. The fit and finish are excellent. The welds are properly ground and neat, and the whole rifle is coated with a very durable satin black finish. It's may not be flat black parkerizing, but it is easier to keep clean.

The action of the mechanisms are identical to the WWII stens. It fires from an open bolt, and the trigger is the same. The only noticable difference is the alterations that were made to the bolt. The bolt slides smoothly in the tube, and snaps forward with a positive SNAP.

As for appearance, I am not a big fan of the T-style stock, as I couldn't get a good cheek weld...I picked up a nice WWII era skeleton wire stock, a mag loader (...a GODSEND for loading stiff mags...) and a PERFECT mag from Stencollector. Had to make some minor modifications to the stock, but it fits perfectly now.

I also picked up a repro Sten carrying case from eBay to store everything in. Excellent quality, and good looks. Highly recommended for any Sten fans...

Range Report.

I took my Sten out to the range a few weeks ago. I loaded up my 3 mags (32 rounders pinned to 5, of course) engaged the safety and inserted the mag. I released the bolt handle from the safety cutout, and took aim. BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG, CLICK! Perfect! The rifle functioned perfectly. the recoil was next to nothing, and the sound was reminiscent of a small calibre rifle (ie. 32-20).

After a few mags of putting rounds down range (..not really aiming at anything all that carefully...) I decided to see if this little gun was accurate. I set up a target at 25m and aimed at centre mass. I emptied 3 mags at the target in fairly rapid succession. The group averaged about 3.75" and was a bit low. I think that the large group is due to poor cheek weld (...was using the T stock...) and cheapie ammo. On my next outing, I will bench rest the rifle and try the same range as well at 75m

Overall, I HIGHLY recommend the ######## rifle. Well assembled, well finished, and...well...not prohibited! Also, Mick is a top notch guy...always answers emails quickly, and kept me up to date on the transfer, shipping, "tech support".

I will ABSOLUTELY be getting another model from him in the future....probably the MkI* or that oh-so-evil looking FRT gun!

Thanks for reading, and feel free to PM me if you have any other questions about the rifle.

And it is more correct. Original Stens were often finished with a black BBQ paint.

The T-stock SUCK! The best mag loader I have is a MAC10 style. They can be had out of the states fairly cheaply and work better than any of the original ones.

When you consider how the barrel is held in place in the MK3, ####e accuracy is not exactly unexpected. Years ago when we still could, I took my MK2 to a local service rifle match and it printed roughly pie plate sized groups at 100. Not bad for a 60+ year old SMG.

Thanks for this. See if you can post some pics. Sounds like a fun little machine.
