Kootenay East MLA Tom Shypitka today introduced the Wildlife Amendment Act, a private member’s bill that would lay the groundwork for a new independent funding model for wildlife and habitat management

“This model would be eligible to receive funding and revenue from the different levels of government, including municipal, provincial, federal, and Indigenous governments. This legislation would ensure that 100 per cent of the revenue from licences, as well as fees from hunting and other forms of land use, such as stakeholder, philanthropy, and industry usage, would all go towards funding wildlife and habitat management,” said Shypitka (pictured above).

The bill’s proposed funding model is partially distanced from the government and would ensure decisions on regulations are science-based and in the best interest of wildlife viewers, hunters, hikers, and other outdoor enthusiasts in British Columbia.

“This bill will be the foundational element that will allow for better data collection, mapping, and identifying of critical wildlife areas among other benefits. Such improvements, in turn, will lead to science-based decision-making to protect our wildlife and habitat for generations to come,” added Shypitka.

lol i can tell as of today they can use the science just to shut down the whole hunting stuff ... good luck on that one.

the number of times i ve read bear hunting should not be because of science: watch out what you re calling for ... you may not like the outcome.

I sincerely doubt that.
But it appears I may have misplaced my tinfoil hat today...

Private members bill from a Liberal while the NDP holds power? Can't see that passing. Too bad, I really like the idea of ALL license dollars going into wildlife and habitat, rather than it all going to general revenue except the little conservation surcharge.

it used to be that way.
Right around the same time government officials in BC decided they deserved the same pay rates , perks and benefits packages as the top paid CEO's in the private sector is also right about the same time they changed the freshwater fishing and hunting licenses to "general revenue". I may be mistaken on the time frame but pretty sure this happened in the early 90's

Ever see a single government grant studying lack of evidence of global warming. Government will simply fund what they want to hear, call any dissent "deniers ", cancel them, persecution and freeze their bank accounts.

Playbook is proven. The sky is falling, their are 68 genders, men have ######s, the budget balances itself.

There's been lots of science funded by oil companies. We have seen the internal reports from companies where there own scientists were raising alarm bells as early as 1958. If you don't believe the scientists funded by Shell and BP who will you believe?...

Doubt you meant too, considering it's you.....but thanks for illustrating my point. Even if it flew right over your head.

It's true, all the big corporations have jumped on the Green New Deal.... either there is a ton of profit in it for them, or they have become reformed capitalists... my money is on profit.

As to the OP, Isn't Biology and Science what is supposed to be shaping the regulations? How is this a new idea?

As a retired Biologist, I can tell you that science IS supposed to be the basis of management decisions.
As a Resident Hunter in BC I can tell that is simply not the case both here & elsewhere.
We are now governed by political decisions, emotion & catering to specific interest groups.

So while what he is proposing isn't actually "new", it is a rather refreshing take on just where we should be returning to in terms of PROPER Management.

Cheers,
Nog

After the last few years of the Lib's "science based" legislation you doubt it? LOL. - dan

I wish I could agree with the OP.
But 'science based logic' keeps us in jab for job mandates and travel restrictions ad nauseum according to the whim of our crime minister.

Meanwhile, most of the modern nations are in at least recovery mode from covide.

We are speaking in terms of Wildlife Management here.

Not every single thing in the world revolves around the Covid issues, despite numerous folks who attempt to make it so.

Not everything revolves around the jab. It just outlined the subversion of democracy, bypassing of human rights, ignoring the charter of rights and freedoms which will be the new norm moving forward.

Cancel hunting under the political armor of "climate". Groom young children in government required courses at the alter of diversity and inclusion, let poor people eat cake by forcing electric vehicle purchases when they can't afford a tank of gas.

It's all for your own good. Resist, we throw you in jail without bail like King, or freeze your bank account.
