Okay I understand this has probably been tallked to death, but I hate the search function.. Anyways, so how does the Mini 14 target stand up to non res black rifles? I understand it is much more accurate than the basic mini 14. Also how does it stand up to sustained fire?

I'm currently waiting for my PAL in the mail and am considering a Mini target, or a non res black rifle. At this point the target is my number one choice because of what I've heard about it, and the price. Anyone who owns one feel the need to chime in?

Thanks,

Brandon

Friends don't let friends buy Mini-14s! Okay, the "target" model may begin to approach the accuracy of, say: an AR-180... But for the money, I'd buy the AR-180!

I HAD a Mini-14, once.

YMMV,

Neal

Mini 14 Target

I have found mine to be one of the most accuate rifles I own. When tuned for the ammo I get a dime size group at 100 yards. It in no way compairs to the standard Mini 14. I have never done that good with my AR 180 B. I always use factory ammo and have not gotten into handloading. I am sure some one who hand loads would have better results with both rifles.
Both are very fun rifles but have a very different look. My opinion is its personal choice.
Have fun
Rick

I have both the MINI 14 target and ARs, @100 yards, the mini target is much better than the 14"5 AR, and little better than the 20" AR. But since mini is not considered as a Black Rifle, it is up to you. IMO: AR looks much better than Mini 14, but Mini 14 TARGET has better accuracy than the ARs.

not black but accurate

My Target model is very accurate with minor tweaking (mostly to save brass from beating), I like the ability to tune the barrel for the ammo.
Heavy as hell, expensive mags... I'd say nice for varmints, not so much for practical rifle matches. So for me AR15 belongs to the range, Mini14 anywhere else. Choose what you need it for most of the time.

Loves 68/69 gr bullets (under 1 moa at 200m)

PS Forget about sustained fire... too expensive! Seriously, it doesn't overheat after 30 rounds of AIMED fire. Which is much better than old style Mini.

I have a laminate stock mini target which weighs 10.5 lbs with 4x12 Leupold scope. I like the laminate stock, however if you are concerned about the weight, the Hogue stock version weighs only 8.5 lbs compared to the 9.5 lbs of the laminate stock version. There is no comparison between the older ranch rifles and the target model.for accuracy, since they are effectively completely different rifles. The target model shoots very consistently, unlike the older ranch rifles. I would be curious to hear how the newer ranch rifles shoot and if the group sizes are effected a lot as the rifle heats up.

Ammunition has become so expensive in Sweden so as to get some value for money, it feels like I want a rifle with good accuracy. I have always liked Ruger mini-14 but their accuracy've often been lamentable. So therefore I think Ruger Mini 14 Target looks interesting.

I hear you - I've had my eyes on the target model for just that reason.

I fired one for a few hours once, we passed hundreds of rounds through it no problem. Were reaching out about 100 yards at popcans, jars, etc. and I found the accuracy to be really good. We also ran four 30 round mags of factory ammo through as quick as I could pull the trigger (pretty fast!) and as fast as I could reload mags and had no issues at all. It wasn't aimed fire, it was keep tapping the trigger and enjoy the sound kind of fire. I wanted to buy one as soon as I handed it back to its owner, haven't yet but only because of $$$, not for any other reason.

It is also depends on if you want a non restricted rifle in comparison to a restricted, I prefer the mini 14 target strictly because i can shoot it without issues unlike the AR only being allowed at the range, as I said, preference.
