Which McMillan stock should I go with for the Mod 70 in 338win for hunting application? Am leaning towards the Supergrade model. In particular am interested how the different stock models might affect recoil and muzzle jump. I have only ever used it with the factory plastic which fits me fine. Now am just wanting to upgrade to something of better quality than the regular tupperware stock. I see they make the Hunters Edge for Mod 70, but only recommended for recoil levels up to 300win. Probably don’t need quite that light anyhow. Feedback appreciated. Thx

Echols Legend. Hands down. It controls recoil better than any other stock I’ve used, is cast on/off, and the pattern was built by one of the worlds top stock makers. The Supergrade is horrid.

I'll second the recommendation of the Echols with the caveat that it doesn't match up great with really thin barrels. A #3 contour or more is best. Oh, and regarding the availability, call Echols and order through him. Even though they show as out of stock, he orderes batches from McMillan as needed.

I found my '06 barrel (about a #2) looked a bit small relative to the forend but it is all personal preference! I like a very slim stock. It didn't look bad but my 375 matched up much better. I kinda wish I still had them!

I think the shank you use helps a lot with that.

Agreed tho, the Echol's Legend is the finest M70 stock.

My thoughts exactly. Intellectually the Legend seems large for a light contour barrel, but providing it’s not a M70 Fwt contour with NO shank, it looks fine.

I also think the ergonomics of a stock are far more important than how it looks. And the Legend is the most comfortable and “most hittable with from field positions” stock I have ever held, M70 or otherwise.

I purchased a Mcmillan "Hunter" for my Model 70 SS Classic 338win mag build. Mine started out as a 7mm rem mag with the factory plastic stock. I bought a #4 weight sporter contour Pacnor SS super match grade barrel, put in a Williams firing pin spring, bottom metal and a Mcmillan Hunter stock with a limbsaver recoil pad. Had the action blueprinted as it was all put together and cut the barrel to 26 inches. I've hunted this hard for about 15 years. The rifle shoots soft, that is, it just doesn't kick much. It is also very accurate. There are a lot of good options out there and that Eecols stock is probably one of them - but so is a Mcmillan Hunter.

Good luck in your project.

Well after a few years keeping eyes peeled I finally found an Echols Legend for my m70 338. Wasn’t able to purchase one direct but came onto a blank with magnum fill. Looking forward to getting it rigged up!!
