Im looking for a serial number on an old Savage model 110 that I got off a buddy. He had it tucked away for about 20 years and being that he isnt a hunter or a shooter didnt want to go thru the hassle of becoming compliant so i took it off his hands for him. I cant seem to find any serial number on the gun. On the left side of the gun it says "proof tested cal .270" just in front of that in a little circle it has a 20j. On the same side of the gun but back on the action it just says "Savage model 110" and a little further back it says "Savage Arms corporation Chicopee Falls Mass U.S.A" Now on the other side of the action in front of the breach is the only other number on the gun but its only 4 digits....? thats not the serial number is it? It has the same number engraved onto the bolt but other than that there are no markings on the gun. Anyone have any info on this gun like how old it is? What its worth? And where I might be overlooking a serial number?

PS I already registered the rifle by the 4 digit number that was on it. I told them it was all I could find and they said ok.

I have a ~10 year old 111F.

Unfortunately, I at work so I can't be certain but
I think the serial number is along the left receiver wall.

I'm sure my serial number is at least one letter and
8 or 9 digits.

E0123456 -- something like that. So I doubt those 4 digits are
a serial number (but you never know).

Shows you the stupidity of the Gun Registry doesn't it?
I have a look when I get home tonight...if you don't have a decent answer by then.

Then that is the "serial number" now.

The serial number on mine is on the left side of the receiver bridge.
(At the back of the receiver, where the bolt goes in.)

My serial number is one letter and 6 digits.
e.g. X123456

you seem to be looking on the barrel, not the action itself
normally, the action has the serial number- its the registered part of the firearm

I think you got the correct number...I had an early Savage 110 from 1960 that had a 5 digit serial number, no letters. Haven't seen one that wasn't on the receiver though....yours must be a very early 110...they were introduced in 1958.

hmm good to know. The 4 digit number I have is 47xx and is located on the action on the right side. So if that is the correct serial number than this rifle must be a very early model. The rifle is in very good to excellent condition. Any thoughts on what it would be worth? I ask because I have someone interested in buying it. Already told him a price and am curious if I'm in the right ballpark.

Your gun is a 110 made in 1958, it was the first year Savage came out with the model. They had low serial numbers up to 1968 when Savage switched to the A series serial number system.

Did you guys think I only know just my 99's?

:D long live Mad Dog :D the Savage King!!

...and 1968 was the year of the US "Gun Control Act of 1968" when all US arms manufacturers were required to use a letter prefix in the serial number....read that somewhere a while back....
