I have a Model 12, 20ga. 2.75", 28" mod choke. Simmons rib, double bead, white ivory post. I assume aftermarket. Fancy wood, with a monte carlo stock and whiteline pad. It almost feels like a trap style stock when I shoulder the gun. Excellent conditon. S/N is just shy of 2 000 000.

I have been given a wide range of values, but I am still trying to figure out if this was a "deluxe" gun, or just a field gun that has been dressed up. I am assuming it was just a field gun, but I want to find out before I decide what I am going to do with it.

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions.

Waterfowler,

Saw your post on the other board. If 'Only Winchesters' can't help you, nobody can IMHO. However, I AM an expert - you know "ex" as in 'has been' (example: ex-husband) and "spurt" as in 'drip under pressure'.:D

Is the Winchester proof mark on the top of the barrel totally visible in an area just below the rib, or has the rib installation covered it up ? ( Examine another Model 12 plain barrel to see the location of the mark). If it's been covered up, then in all likelihood the rib installation was an aftermarket, not factory job. Literally thousands of Model 12's were "upgraded" by adding Simmons ribs and aftermarket stocks. "Outside" supplied ribs were also utilized by Winchester late in the Model 12 production period (ostensibly to cut costs) ... the rib post type, pinning method, existance or lack of the traditional "duck bill" extension on top of the receiver and location (or covering-up ) of the Winchester proof mark may help tell the tale of factory or aftermarket. Good description of factory styles in Mattis' ( sp ? ) book on
The Model 12.

Something is out of whack here!
the gun is a 20 gauge, but with a Monte Carlo stock?
Skeet guns have lower combs generally, unless the original owner had a real strange build on him(or her)!
The Simmons may be original, I have a M12 that has a Simmons on it and it was installed at thee factory.
Idon't think the Whireline pad is original however, mainly because but I can't get past the butt stock configuration!

I know it sounds odd, but........

I am thinking that someone built the gun to be used for trap shooting.

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions......

a. post some good quality detailed pictures...

b. show it to an actual knowledgable Winchester collector...

A lot of Model 12's had aftermarket ribs and stocks installed... Beretta Boy knows of what he speaks... there are details that will tell the story.

Here are a few photos.

It's a nice looking clean little gun. Not a bad looking piece of wood, despite the Monte Carlo style - certainly looks to be enough to work with. I would make the white line spacers "disappear" and put on a Pachmayr Old English Decelerator pad, altering the stock at the same time to get the drop at comb, heel, pitch & cast off to suit. For what it is, $ 750 ... about the same as you might expect for an all original Browning replica Model 12. Should be a nice little shooter for birds or clays ...

It is a nice piece, and I would expect it to sell for around the same price as the Browning/ Winchester reproductions, around $700.00 give or take a few bucks!
