Having just acquired a Winchester model 12 featherweight with a 28 inch modified choked barrel in 95% condition I realized I'm not sure whether I can use steel shot in it. Some say that with the modified choke it should be fine , but others say not to. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Back when steel shot first came out, my dad had a couple of model 12's. 2 different gun smiths looked at them and said there would be no problem shooting steel out of them if he opened up the chokes. So you can take that for what it's worth but I'm sure there are those who are shooting steel out of them.

We also shot steel out of my dads late 20's model 12 with no apparent issues until someone said it should'nt be done for fear of ruining the barrel. This featherweight is in such good condition I'd rather not ruin it , but if the modified choke makes it safe I'd love to use it for waterfowl. Thanks for your opinion.

What those 2 smiths told him back then specifically was that the steel shot would not hurt the bores on them. Again, that was the opinion of those 2 smiths. He did shoot steel out of one of them for about 4 years and there was no damage done. I now have the gun. But using steel is only a decision you can make. If you want a guarantee that nothing will happen, then you might be best not to use it . You could always use the expensive non-toxic shot in it if you were only going to use it the odd time for waterfowl.
