Hi everyone, looking for some advice. I plan to go look at a Winchester model 12 12gauge 2 3/4" with the poly choke. I know this is a hard question but assuming decent condition, what would be a realistic price range? I don't know how old the gun would be. Are there certain defects that these guns are known for that I should be looking for? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

$200 & up .
The M12 is the classic 12 ga pump gun.
Since the one you are looking at has a poly choke you will be OK with steel shot.
I bet more ducks & geese have been taken with a M12 than any other gun
I have 5 of them.

Model 12's vary from $150 to $10,000. . Originality, Rarity and Condition factored into the State of the economy usually sets the price. . A post war, plain barrel, field grade, M12 in 98% original condition is worth in the ball park of $550 to $650. . If it has an after market recoil pad on a 85% gun with a poly-choke . . $150 to $200. . No after market pad . . $175 to $200. . The poly-choke is what drops the re-sale price the most. . Some folks like them for shooters, and others do not. .

older poly chokes can not be used with steel

Old poly chokes were silver soldered onto barrels whereas Today they are threaded on. Talked to Poly Choke people a couple years ago and the rep stated that the older device could shoot off the end of the barrel if steel shot was fired when in full setting and or if large stell pellets were used as well. He went on to say that he could forsee no problems in shooting #4 steel through the old chokes if set at modified or more open. I wouldn't though.

most model 12s have older poly chokes (i have one)

Based on the feedback you received and my over 20 years of duck and goose hunting experience why the model 12. If the gun is for migratory birds you might want to look at other options and buy the model 12 for grouse.
