I got a Model 12 Win and use Winchester ammo (from Walmart) and Federal light loads both have fail to eject problems every 20 or so rounds. The ejector is in good shape and firearm is in overall beautiful shape, very little use and could pass for a new firearm.

Is this model known for being fussy about ammo?

My 870 rem will work with anything.

That cheap ammo can stick causing rough extraction. With the Model 12 if the extraction is delayed a little, the spent round doesn't hit the ejector just right and can fail to eject. There are two options #1: polish the chamber of the 12 (don't forget the chamber ring too) but do not remove any material just a good polish with Flitz or some other polish or #2: don't shoot that crap walmart Winchester ammo. I would opt for #2.

Promo ammo has and will continue to screw up in the very best of shotguns
This is truly one of those cases in which you get what you pay for
Run a few boxes of AA through it and it will cycle perfect garanteed
Cheers

the cheap ammo has cheap brass that is too thin, expands because its too soft then gets stuck for a few seconds in the chamber when heated till it cool, contracts and you are able extract it easier, soloution, dont buy that crap.

I an fighting with a model 12 right now, trying to get it to eject shells out of it. Polished the chamber up, and the ring and they still get stuck. I have tried cheap shells, and more expensive shells and still the same. I kinda figured the cheap shells would stick, and had high hopes for the higher priced shells but no luck. Anybody got any other words of wisdom to share?

I have Model 12 that been fed lots of the cheap Winchester and Federal promo stuff, it's never had a failure to eject?
And I have an older Wingmaster thats never (yet) had an issue with the cheap target ammo either?
I guess I'm just lucky.

Measure the I.D. of the chamber ring and the I.D. of the chamber. If the chamber ring has a smaller I.D. than the chamber you may be getting a "flare" effect. The "brass" on the hull, inside the chamber, expands to a larger diameter and cannot easily squeeze back thru the chamber ring.

Have a good look at your extractor, particularly the angle where it grabs the shell, the part that engages the rim, and the tension on it. It shouldn't fte. What does the case rim look like, is a chunk torn out of it, or does it look like the extractor slipped over the edge... Which will go some way in telling you what is happening- either a sticking hull as was mentioned, or weak extraction. Fwiw, mine never fails, regardless of ammunition used, and it's old, was my grandad's gun from new, probably my favorite shotgun.

Its not chambered it 2-3/4 So your shells are unfolding in the forcing cone causing a tough extraction

Some are 2-3/4 so some people might argue.... but depending on the year of manufacture some have a short chamber. Mine is 2-5/8". I think wiki says that they are 2-9/16.

**Added notes: old paper shotgun shells didnt unroll as much as modern plastic shells. Meaning chambers at that time where not as long? TRUE or FALSE?

I think we are making a mountain out of a moe hill until the OP says if it functions with other brands of shells. If the gun functions fine with other brands of 2 3/4" shells, then there likely isn't anything wrong with the gun. If it won't function with any brand then you have a problem. Plus he implies that it only happens every 20 rounds or so . I would think it would happen more often then that if there was an actual problem with the gun.

Well, everyone said "Ammo" for the OP.
Rotaxpower Said all ammo FTE and got Chamber length as an issue.

What moutain/molehill is there?

We are talking the OP's gun,the subject of this thread, not the gun belonging to Rotaxpower. He evidently has a problem as he said it will not eject with any shell. That is 2 different things from what the OP is stating. He said his only malfunctions about every 20 rounds with cheap ammo. That is why I said for the OP to state whether or not it works fine with other shells. If it does, there can't be much wrong with the gun so that would be making a mountain out of a moehill as far as the OP's gun is concerned. He might be looking for a more complex solution to a problem that doesn't really exist except for changing ammo.
As far as Rotaxpower's gun, that is a gun with an evident problem that could well be unrelated to the OP's gun and is probably a topic for discussion in its own thread. Plus when I said making a mountain out of a moehill, I was talking in general, not specifically to your thread. There's no need to tear into a gun if it works fine with other ammo. At least most people wouldn't.

I do agree with most of that.

Flip side.... my opinion is that there could be a hardware issue.... or a ammo issue. If we discuss the different possibilities we might be able to help the OP with their problem. IE Rotax inadvertently brought up an issue that is tied into chamber length..... could this problem not be related to the OP? Could certain manufacturers of shells expand a hair further then others causing a malfunction? I am not say it is or isnt. Mearly I think it is related enough to have a conversation about it.

I doubt an over length cartridge would cause sticky extraction. If an over length cartridge was fired in a short chamber most of the plastic hull mouth in the forcing cone would just be shot out.
