are the receivers on a model 1892 in 38-40 and the receiver on a model 1892 in 44-40 the same??????? Obviously I know the the barrels are different, but I'm wanting to change a shot out 38-40 to a nice crisp 44-40, but I want to keep the better receiver which is on the 38-40.

have I confused you.......

thanks in advance

Generally parts from the 38 and 44WCF are interchangeable. If I had an original 38 WCF barrel I would have it rebored and chambered to 44WCF. You will find with barrel swaps most likely the forend, cap and sights won't fit properly. Do you have a factory take off 44WCF barrel or one from Numrich Arns (now GunParts Corp) or the more recent 94 barrels restamped 92's? Sell what ever 44 WCF barrel you have and rebore the original. Best way to go!

both barrels and rifles are all original equipment.....all factory, and all antiques. I don't see a problem with the barrels its the receivers I'm concerned about, specifically the feeding of different sized shells. put both receivers side by side and measure them up and I can't see any difference at all, hence my question am I missing something. From past experience lining up the barrels on winchesters is dead easy.

All 92 Winchester actions are dimensionally the same. The 25 and 32 WCF share common components as does the 38 and 44's. As in any conversion the carrier and the guides will have to be "fine tuned" and this is a time consuming and irreversible job.
You can rebarrel or rebore to a different calibre.....your choice. I would rebarrel in the same calibre.....nothing wrong with a 38WCF.
What type of replacement barrel do you have?

Claven2 nailed it down...winchester 92's were hand fitted. Tuning means very careful metal removal and polishing on the carrier and the cartridge guides. Actions may look the same however there only similar. Take the receiver to a gunsmith who is familar with these actions and ask for an estimate. There's hours of fiddling to get it right. Don't know why you want to change calibre. The 38WCF is a better cartridge ballistically and will take down a deer in heavy brush. The cheapest and best way for you to go is to have the existing barrel relined...sell the 44WCF barrel...it will pay the cost of this work providing that the barrel is a winchester 92 not something else as I stated in an earlier post. If you email me you address I'll send you a parts diagarm with the components highlighted that you need to "Fine Tune" to change your gun over to 44WCF. Ron PS ( Yes I own a 92 Win)
