Hello all. I have a 1894 short 30/30 that I am wondering a few things about. According to the interweb my serial number of 664049 was made in 1912. Is this correct? Also on the left hand side of the gun it has a metal ring. i am wondering why it has a ring. It looks like you could hang the gun from it. Just seeking some knowledge from much smarter people than myself. I can email pictures to anyone who wants to see them. Thanks everybody and have a great day.

Metal Ring is a Saddle Ring attaching it when using it on horseback.
1912 sounds right.
It is not considered an antique being a centrefire made after 1895, it is Non Restricted.

According to my records it it 1913 production. And it sounds like a saddle ring carbine. Standard carbines had a 20 inch barrel, full magazine, carbine butt(a wide, curved steel butt plate), straight grip. Any deviation from those features makes it a special order rifle and increases value somewhat. Some had half, two thirds or 3/4 length magazines or pistol grip stocks(rarely) or shotgun butts(flat) or sling swivels or special sights or barrels from 14 to 19 inches or lacking the saddle ring(discontinued in the late 1920's). Pics are really necessary.

Hello,

Serial number 664049 was manufactured during April of 1914. Based on your description it is what collectors refer to as a saddle ring carbine. The ring was used to attach a leather strap to so that the gun could be easily removed from a vertical hanging scabbard on the side of a saddle. The strap would extend out of the scabbard and is easily reached. If you would like an estimate of its value you can send photos to me 2bitrifles@gmail.com
