Model 1917 Globco

I received a 1917 rifle from my uncle, it is a 1917 redone by Globco ( sported).
The question I have is:
When I have the safety in the fire position and rack the bolt, then put the safety on. It works the way it should! ( I can put the safety on and off several times, and no movement).
But if I put on the safety on then rack the bolt. Then take the safety off the bolt falls. ( as it was to fire ).
It concerns me something is wrong! Am I right? Thanks

"Racking" the bolt means opening the bolt to #### the rifle, right?

When the safety is fully forward (safety off) and the bolt is opened and closed the rifle is then cocked and the safety can be engaged and disengaged. With the safety fully to the rear (safety on) the bolt cannot be opened and the rifle will not fire. Moving the safety fully forward (safety off) will enable the rifle to fire.

If the rifle is uncocked and the safety is fully to the rear(safety on) the bolt cannot be opened to #### the rifle.

In a serviceable M1917 the safety only has 2 operating positions; fully forward (safety off) or fully to the rear (safety on). There is no intermediate position for the safety.

If you have the bolt open, and then turn the safety "on" (to the rear), you can close the bolt with force, but the cocking piece will be protruding from the shroud an abnormal amount. When you then rotate the safety forward to "off", the firing pin may slam forward and jump the trigger sear. What I just described is absolute wrong way to operate this rifle, but it can be done. The first step, closing the bolt on a safety that is "on", is the first step in disassembling the bolt, but is not part of operating the rifle. The correct check for safety function is to move safety "off" (forward), close the bolt, turn the safety "on" (to the rear), pull and release the trigger - the firing pin should not fall. Then turn the safety "off" (forward)- the firing pin still should not fall. At that point you know your safety is operating properly. If the firing pin drops on either of these two steps, there are broken or misadjusted parts that need replacement.

Thanks Guy's! I just thought it was weird that the bolt would fall when you had the safety on ( to the rear).Then cycle the bolt to fire (closed) Then take the safety off ( forward ) the bolt would fall? as in this case.

Just not trained like a soldier was 100 years ago lol.
You can also fire a '98 Mauser pushing the trigger forward, not sure if that would work with a 1917, I should try it sometime...
