I just picked up a S&W Model 57 in 41 Magnum and would like to know more about it. From my research this gun was made in 1980 and is in very good shape (the finish is almost flawless but the pic doesn't show it very well).
Anyone have one of the revolvers?
What do you think of it?
Do you handload?
Hickok 45 has a video of the gun and it really kicks serious butt.

Same basic revolver as the Smith M29 44 mag. Simply with a slightly smaller hole. I really like the 41 actually and prefer it to the 44 but it is less popular as it never really caught on as much as the 44. Brass is as readily available as the 44 so reloading isn't an issue. Recoil actually can be similar as the 44.

This is a premium revolver.

Beauty. I like the 41 mag a lot. Too bad it is not a little more common up here. The 57 and 657 are some of my favourite DA revolvers. Agreed some classic wood grips would be a nice addition

Good score!

Have owned one for years, too.

Prefer Pachmayr "gripper" grips for shooting, although the factory wood target grips make for better pics.

NAA.

As everyone has said...a great N frame and cartridge. I have a 57 like yours (but with target wood grips) and a 657 stainless with 4" barrel. Love them, both are on my 'Never Sell' list. If you reload, put 21.9 gr of H110 behind a 210 gr XTP or JHP, and let er buck! Love it.
The one on the bottom is the 657. (Top to bottom, 686, 629, 625, 657)

Nice collection!
I'm looking forward to bringing the revolver to the range. Should be great times!

I purchased one in the 80's and it was my second big bore hand gun, the first was an M-29 44 mag. I actually liked it better than the 44 and I shot it better too. I'm not certain why I even sold it but I'd like to get another one, this time maybe in a Blackhawk.

The .41 Mag is a lot easier on an 'N' frame than the .44, typically being able to go multiple times the round count with hotter loads before the gun starts needing attention.

Its also somewhat easier on the shooter, giving you 90%+ of the horsepower for 20-30% less recoil for an equal load, compared to the .44 Mag.

And, it doesn't have to lie about its size like its .429 caliber older brother!

Evening all, just chiming in here as I just inherited my dads model 57 41 mag and pretty stoked.

I'm in Port moody, have only just begun looking for rounds for this thing and they seem to be hard to come by.

I'm not apposed to self loading but wondered if anyone new of a shop in the lower mainland that carries this calibre rounds?

An outstanding cartridge. I cannot remember if anyone makes 41 Special brass akin to the 44 Special in 44 Mag.
But even so, one doesn’t have to load the 41 to its top potential for it to be a good & accurate shooter. Handloaded down to velocities 900 FPS & under, preferably 800 & under, the 41 has enormous potential.

I had some luck finding ammo on the EE. Still need to pick up some from a guy in Edmonton if the COVID thing ever ends. In the meantime I'm reloading what I have and having a blast shooting the hand cannon!

I fear you will be disappointed. (I bet factory ammo is rare-ish even in the US) And it you were to find any (try Reliable Gun &T or Italian Sporting Goods?) the price would likely be pretty unpleasant, so I suspect handloading will be the only practical alternative. Rusty Wood here in Mission has cases and hard-cast bullets (looks like he's doing his own now that Bullet Barn moved to AB). Budget Shooter Supply only has brass.

Budget Shooter Supply and Rusty Wood both have Starline 41 Spec. brass.

I have seen .41 in stock at many stores throughout Alberta and BC. Mostly Winchester Grey box. It's usually pretty dusty and priced pretty high... This thread got me looking at the SW .41s, the 657 is a very appealing piece. How common are they in Canada?

Not common unfortunately. I've seen 2 657s on EE since joining the forum. One was a restricted 4" unicorn (which I'll happily take it off your hands for a good deal, TC!)

Had one of the newer models. Shot well.
I personally prefer the SA Ruger Blackhawks I have so the 57 went to a new home where it will be enjoyed more.
Love the 41 Rem Mag!
Have 2 NM Blackhawks (Blued and stainles 4 5/8" barrels), and would love an older 3 screw flat top with a 5 1/2" barrel (if they ever made it in that configuration)
Also have a Marlin lever action chambered to the 41 and would love to take it on a cougar hunt!

For nice wood grips, you can also check with Texas Grips 361-549-9512 Henry is a great guy to deal with.
I got extended grips in curly maple and black laminated for my Blackhawks that fit my large hands better than the factory grips.

You can't have it even for a horrible deal, never mind a good one! Lol

I've got 300 brass to load, a bunch of 210 gr JHP and then have to wait for ranges to open back up. I'm miserable lately, no range time.
