I've recently caught the bug to buy another rifle, and I've been eyeing the 7 SAUM for no other reason than it's caught my fancy.

Most of the 7 SAUMs that I've seen in the EE are Remington Model 7s, but I've also seen one or two Model 700's, which brings me to my question:

In terms of feeding reliability and flexibility for the handloader, does the short action receiver of the Model 700 have any advantages or disadvantages when compared to the shorter Model 7's receiver?

If you were given the choice between either model in the same chambering, what would be your preference and why?

I now fellas that have both, and I would say that if you are loading 160's you are going to see a 50fps difference between them do to the Model 7's shorter box.
That means you can still break 2900fps with the model 7 and that isn't anything to sneeze at. The bullets smaller than 160 it is a wash.

I thought both had 2.83" mag boxes? Only m7 I've owned was a 7-08 but it took 2.83"

I've owned 3 7saum's in 700's.

Rem mod 7

I have both the 300 &7mm in SUAM, they are in the model 7 with 22" barrels. These rifles are equal to the older long actions in 300WM & 7RM in 700s.
The difference being the newer shorter versions are much nicer to handle in a hunting situation.
I like EM. Bill

For some reason i thought the actions of the 7 and 700 were pretty much the same- i could be wrong. I believe the main difference is the contour and length of the barrel, with the 700 being more stout and a few inches longer. The longer barrel of the 700 makes for the slighter higher velocities.

The action, and action screws are shorter. As well the scope mounting arrangement is different/shorter.

The Model 7 in 7mm SAUM is a sweet rig. I have the 700 in 7-08; it's good but I love my M7. Great length and weight for packing around all day and it's got plenty of zip for longer shots. I've had excellent results/accuracy with 160gr Accubonds over H4831sc.
I'm still planning on replacing the stock though, with most likely a Wildcat. The factory one is a typical Remington synthetic... flimsy. Other than that no complaints. Never had problems with feeding the SAUM cartridge in the short action.

Well then, I'm an idjit ain't I? I had never measured one, and assumed it was smaller for some reason. Then, there isn't a difference and I'd buy anything but the one Archie was (is?) selling. That one will always be tainted.
