Model 7: which McMillan edge stock?

Thinking about replacing the wood stock on my Model 7 with a McMillan Edge. Should I get the factory model 7 stock, the Remington Mountain Rifle pattern or the compact Hunter's Edge? All three are available in Edge fill.


  1. The factory M7 stock may have just a tad too much drop at comb with a stock mounted. Would either of the others position better for a scope?
  2. Recoil control is a factor as I find the factory stock is a handful in .308, and now the rifle will be lighter. Which of the three will handle recoil the best?
  3. Which of the three stocks is likely to weigh the least in Edge fill?
 
Hunters edge will be the lightest, and has a shorter forend, so would suit the shorter barrel best.

RMR has less drop, cheekpiece, and longer forend. M7 pattern has the Schnabel tip.

Id go Hunters Edge, with a 1" pad.
 
Hunters edge or M7. I had a RMR on a m7 and it looked stupid. As Blargon mentioned it has a longer forend and it looks out of place on a 20" tube. That and the shape of the cheek piece is ugly. My $0.02
 
I had an EDGE RMR on a 260 M7, and it just wasn't right for a 20" pipe. Leave the RMR for 22-24" barrels. The Model 7 stock just sucks plain and simple. The grip is like a banana, which is great if you're Rem338Win, he'll just slap some mayonaise on it and he'll feel right at home.

If I were doing it all over again I'd go with the compact.
