Am I the only one who wants a model 70 chambered in 308win with a 1-10" rifling twist barrel?

Why do they put a 1-12 twist barrel on the 308's and 1-10" on all the other 30cal's? They shoot the same bullets and require stabilisation at lower velocities, is it a marketing gimmick to sell the more expensive 30-06 and 300magnums ammo.

Incidendtly kimber is doing the same thing???

I did call winchester and told them I wanted to buy their rifle... with a 1-10" twist. Will do so again periodically... If anybody shares my desire for such a rifle they could help encourage them to make this a reality.

That's very interesting. I have a M70 Featherweight in .308 and never knew it had a 1:12 twist until reading your post. I didn't pay much attention to the twist since I only intended on shooting 150gr bullets. The 1:10 could possibly make it a bit more versatile though.

Have you tried heavier bullets to see if they stabilize or not? I have no experience loading heavier bullets in a .308 with a 1:12 rate, only read that they may not stabilize.

1:12 isn't so bad. Heck the C3 sniper has that twist rate and shoots 175gr SMK just fine out to 600+ metres. For the ranges you'll be hunting at 1:12 will be fine with heavy bullets. I very much would like to get to know this rifle in 308 Win as well.

The Remington 5R Milspec also has a 1:11.25 twist and from all accounts it shoots 175's well.

I would lean more towards the idea that the heaviest most will shoot in a 308 is a 180 gr, whereas the magnums are more likely to see the 190-220 gr bullets used. Makes more sense than an expensive ammo conspiracy.

Is .30-06 generally more expensive than .308? Doesn't seem like it.

For brand name sporting ammo, no. But when scrounging range brass you will get alot more 308 than 30-06, also there is more cheap gov surplus type 308 ammo available. So it definitly can be cheaper especially if you want to shoot it lots.

Even then when shooting 180 grain bullets in the cold... I would much rather have the 1-10.

If it was only ever going to be for shooting 150gr bullets, it would be fine. But a gun like this should be able to reach out to 500yrds with handloads and I am partial to 180gr bullets and believe this to be a marginal rate of twist for those bullets especially in the cold.

I am starting to think I should just get a 30-06 as they do come with the 1-10 barrels and offer a little better performance as well... Just wont have as good of a supply of free brass to wear it out with.

When you can get 100 pieces of Lapua brass for $70 why would you shoot range brass? Good brass shoot with reasonable loads will last 5-7 loadings easy.
Buy the .308 if it will stabilize a 175gr SMK you will be fine to 500yds. Heck, 168's have been doing this seriously for years.

My remington in 1-12" twist shoots 175 SMKs to 700m without issue. Very accurate handload mind you, but excellent accuracy with the heavy 175.

$70 dollars out of my shooting budjet for brass. Way too cheap for that and if I was not it would be 300wsm brass but seriously thats 200 30cal bullets from the classifieds or two pounds of powder, or...

Due to the insistance of most posters that 1-12 will indeed stabilize 168-175gr bullets I have done some research as I did not think that that was the case. But I learned something... maybe I will get it in 308 after all but now I'm considering the 30-06 as well and need to decide before chritmas.

I own this rifle in .270 and it is the best rifle I have ever owned. I love it in .270 because of the 22" barrel and it can hold 5 + 1 rounds. Super well built. Shoots sierra game kings the best. Hornady interlocks just about as good but don't even think about hornady sst's.
